Considering the pronunciation in the Japanese version is "ketto shi" - which is close to the Gaelic - it does seem like a huge oversight on the localization team's part.

Reminder: The Japanese do not have a natural "-th" sound. The closest they have is "-s".

And there is her card from the FF7 trading card game.

Oh and about Cait Sith's name, the Japanese take the time to pronounce it correctly.

It's not even an oversight, but a deliberate choice.

Like, there's no way the team didn't know what the original Japanese pronunciation is, esp since they'd have to be communicating with the Japanese side of things at every step. They just chose to change it on purpose, probably because they figured it's what most English speaking fans already called him.

Which is stupid, but understandable in a way.

This isn't the first time a dub has changed a character's name, even amongst Square games. What's interesting is that most weebs get mad when the dub changes something, but most people are fine with this change?

TIL Darth Vader was a Shee Lord.

English pronunciation of "Cait Sith" is not "Ket Shee". It's only natural for non-Japanese speaking kids, which many of us were when we first played FF7, to have no idea it's pronounced any other way.

It's literally just weeb elitism talking down to people who only just found out the proper pronunciation and don't anybody try to pretend otherwise.

Tbf, from what I've been reading of Rebirth there are a lot of weird decisions made for the localization.

Like changing iconic attacks like "Climhazzard" to "Ascension," even though the Japanese name is literally "/Climb Hazard."

The Japanese didn't invent Gaelic.

But do you also say "Queesadihla" and "Bahn app ah tit" because you're not Mexican or French?

Do you call him Seen Bean?

Do they not teach loan words in America anymore?

That's what the streamer Maximilian Dood thought too. After that whole thing with him blew over, he thought they may pronounced it as "Kate Sith" in the western releases because that's what most people called the character here anyway.

Yes, then you later look it up and realize you were wrong.

There are many things I pronounced wrong when I was a stupid kid that I later realized I was wrong on and then corrected myself on.

My point is if you "sound it out" based on what those letters put together usually sound like in English, then a typical American who doesn't know Japanese would not derive "Ket Shee" from "Cait Sith". But people here are suggesting everyone should have, which is ignorant and absurd.

Bruh. Knowing Japanese isn't going to help you derive the proper pronunciation of Gaelic.

i don't think anyone is trying to refute the idea that the way it is written doesn't follow standard pronunciation.

And then you find out that you are wrong and correct yourself. Even if you ignore foreign loan words, someone who only used English words as they sound would be almost incomprehensible to other English speakers.

No, because no one is saying that you're supposed to randomly derive the correct pronunciation like you're claiming, but more that the correct pronunciation is more common knowledge now and should be used.
