When describing someone's great attributes, 'hard working' is often thrown in.

What does that mean and why is it good? Does it make someone better than someone who's not hard working?

No, RDR2 had a side mission about a "hard working" runaway slave catcher.

It means you're willing to put up with way more work than you reasonably should, which is a plus for the bosses as it means they can pay one person to do the work of several people until you eventually burn out and get replaced.

I think at one time "hard working" meant something. "Good ole Festus was a hard working man. He plowed his fields from sunup till sundown to feed his 8 children."

Work isn't anything like that now for most people. It's about slaving away for some corporation making them rich. And the work itself isn't hard physically unless you're doing construction or something.

Trouble is you just can't tell for sure right there, right then...

You can often brute force the solution to problems if you don't know how to solve them in a better way. Either way, you effectively completed your task. So it's all the same

The problem is that being "hard working" is a trait usually attributed to people who sit in offices answering phone calls and emails for nine hours a day instead of eight hours a day.

Everyone describes themselves as hard working though, from the bottom to the top. Here's the thing.

We don't really have metrics for this in the white collar world. What makes someone a "hard worker" is just that they describe themselves as such. It's quantifiable, but we do not quantify it. Everyone is a hard worker if they say they are.

Meanwhile physical laborers have to actually earn the moniker. If you work a physically demanding job, such as transmission rebuilding, and you absolutely slam all day to keep up with the workload, but then you take an extra five minutes on your break or only work your expected shift your boss is going to call you lazy. Remember, he came in an hour early and didn't take his breaks today as he answered calls and emails. He worked harder.

So, tl;dr it's horseshit.

Yes actually. At least in the eye of employers.
A smart worker that done the work in 4 hours and taking the rest 4 hours to rest will be seen worse than someone who did 8 hours of "hard" working.
And don't forget there's still assholes that thinks 40 hours of work are sign of lazy employee.

It can be as long as it doesn't pertain to being a corporate slave. But working to provide for your family and putting them first for safety and comfort is admirable

Hard working for yourself or family is admirable.

For a boss that only sees you as a disposable cog? Not so much.

Depends on perspective I guess. Like a CO worker of mine at this new job told the supervisor he liked working with me cause I actually work as compared to another co worker who is lazy as fuck. He appreciates that he knows he won't have to pick up any slack when it's me he's working with.

Meanwhile you could have someone hardworking but their kids/spouse wishing they where home more.

It depends on the work, dude. Like Cait and Notti said.

Like working your ass off without getting compensated? That's crazy. You have to get paid what you are worth.

But in general, being a hard working person? Awesome trait. Are you more likely to get ahead in life that way? Absolutely.

white collar workers can be hard workers as well. Its harder for an observer to know without context. But even if you sit at your desk for 8 hours, not actually doing anything other than thinking on a solution to a problem, that can be hard work

I fucking hate people like this. My supervisor is like this and called me lazy because I didn't want to work any more mandatory overtime. We were told on a Thursday afternoon that we'd have to work that Saturday and Sunday. I wound up having to cancel my plans for the weekend.

Eh depends on how mentally taxing their job is. I've had super easy jobs when it came to physical labor that where very mentally taxing. I've had the opposite too. And then I've had some that where both.

In my experience after years and years of working, it's better to be reliable and consistent in your work (not the best but not the worst) and have leadership and teamwork skills. The balls-to-the-wall hard workers usually get abused by management to do everything and eventually all burn-out and become extremely bitter, and almost never become promoted because you don't want to move your most productive worker to a spot that supervises and doesn't produce.

Just made me remember even though I'd apply for promotion part of me didn't want it cause I knew certain things just wouldn't get done right without me doing it myself

There is a difference between working hard as in taking your job serious and working hard as my job is all I do and hobbies are non-productive. The latter is cringe and a reason why some hyper capitalist societies like the US, The Netherlands and South Korea are soulless.

Unfortunately the latter was damn near me at my last job. But I was physically at my job site 12 and a half hours a day and typically 6 days a week. Didn't have time for much else outside maybe a hour or two of gaming

What does that mean and why is it good? Does it make someone better than someone who's not hard working?

Yea. Usually.

Typically it is used as a benchmark adjacent to someone who is not only productive in relation to general society, but also someone who goes after and achieves their goals.

A person whom thrives in the face of adversity is typically a better husband, father, and overall person than someone whowelldoesnt.

It's generally a positive trait, but most employers want someone who is hardworking and UNQUESTIONING ie a doormat who won't complain to the unions when you cut their wages.

I mean, thats for shitty minimum wage jobs. In general once you get into salaried paying career orientated roles, being non-agreeable is way more conducive to success, and future job growth.
