and think "Wow, this is truly one of the greatest games ever."

This game aged poorly. People who think CT is one of the GOATs played it in the late 90s or early 2000s. At the time, time travel seemed like a cool concept, I guess.

This also applies to games like Super Mario Bros. 3, a generic platformer. Must have been amazing to play in the 90s.

Certain games like FF6 and FF7 live up to its reputation as one of the greatest games ever. I finished these games for the first time in the 2010s and I agree that they are timeless masterpieces.

I never played it back in the day, but tried the DS version. Not sure if it was because of the platform I played it on, but it didn't hook me.

There are absolutely some older "Best game ever" games that will not seem as impressive by a new player today. Not sure I'd rank Chrono Trigger among them.

I'd say OoT is one though. Far from saying it's a bad game, I just don't think it will register the same for someone playing it for the first time today. It just wouldn't have that wow factor that was so much part of the experience when playing it in 1998.

The N64 version is really hard to play because the frame rate and draw distance are awful, but the 3DS version is great.

it aged really well, everything from the sprites/artwork, music, combat, and story are all solid imo.
idk that someone who played it for the first time will say "it's the best!" but anyone who likes modern indie games will prob see why CT among other snes classics is one of the go-to sources of inspiration.

I think to realy find chrono trigger that impressive nowadays you gotta appreciate the technical/aesthetic aspects. even nowadays the game looks very nice imo, when you compare it to other stuff of the era it's like a visual masterpiece.

the story is not bad but sort of suffers from the lack of text that basically all games had back then. Not to say every game needs to have 10 million words or whatever but chrono trigger definitely has a wordcount small enough that it interferes with development of characters and the plot

You played FF6 and thought it was timeless? If you're talking about the gameplay only then it was basic as fuck. The Esper system, though while fun, was not as engaging as FF7's Materia or CT's Tech system.

FF6 is great, but I admit it had its flaws. I found FF7 to be way more enjoyable.

For the longest time I put FF VI up as my favorite FF game, and one of if not my all time favorite games. I played it again recently for the first time in like 20 years. And I still think it's a very good game, but it also very much feels it's age. I enjoyed my recent replay of FF IX a lot more, I'd say that one is way more timeless.
