we are closest to the matrix for which i assume you meant "imprisonment".

just look at cell phones and the internet. it looks different, but the effect is the same. a completely different world, digitally.

Complete societal collapse seems more likely before the tech is far enough along for any of these scenarios

like, -maybe- matrix if we're lucky. But given how things are it's less "virtual prison" and more "okay here's a thing that makes your life suck less, that'll be 3000$/month plus tax" that lasts maybe a week before getting sold out for ad space

I think it's going to be closer to the Wall-E collapse.

Though I part of me thinks the dystopia that Netrunner had is in the cards. Few mega-corporations controlling the world. Society restless due to AI and clones.... oh shit we're probably about 15 years out from this...
