People talked about FF7 and Zelda OoT for so long back then(although maybe I was a kid and it felt longer).

To me it's one of the best turn based rpgs of all time despite a few issues I have with the story(IW is the better game, but Y7 had a better story)

Gaming is a lot bigger than it used to be, and a lot better explored.

I, for one, won't have time to play anything newly released for many years, and I when I do, there are tons of huge budget games to choose from.

Same thing with movies, nothing has lasting power anymore.

Infinite Wealth wasn't a big name title in America.

Plus back then we could only afford to own like 10 games at a time and just played them over and over. Now we have like 500 games in our Steam library that we will never play.

That's what you get with the atomization of culture and the deluge of new shit from absolutely everywhere

I love Yakuza, actually.

But

I still have to finish 3, 4, 5, 6 and LAD at a minimum before I even consider IW. Kinda want to do Ishin and Gaiden first too.

And that's on top of literally dozens of other games I've never even touched, going as far back as the NES.

Just too many games nowadays

The NES, in its lifetime, had somewhere in the 1,400 range for its entire catalog

In 2023 alone, on Steam there were 10x that many games released

Some games do have staying power like FFXIV due to MMO, Skyrim due to modding community, Elden Ring, Smash, etc.

Topic would be more poignant if you picked a game that had more universal appeal. Or at the least just more appeal. I dont care about yakuza so the game holds 0 appeal for me even though some swear by the game and general series.

Elden Ring and BG3 are still talked about. Like a Dragon IW is good but more like some niche rpg not Zelda or FF7.

More games, broader interests, more specific communities (such as subreddits), fewer games make it big enough to get everywhere. It takes a Baldur's Gate 3 or Elden Ring to hit that level of hype these days.

No. I usually think NG+ makes games too easy unless it's one of those games where it's technically the hard mode

Yeah true. But BG3 was released not that long ago
