It completely depends, and there is usually a peak age and then it gets worse

Only fine wines should be aged past 5 years, and only a few types of those should be aged past 20. I think only Port goes to 40 with any regularity. Beyond that, you get either vinegar or funky experimental wine.

In a blind taste test that someone didn't tell you the age of the bottle, I doubt most would even know the difference between expensive wine and cheap wine. The power of psychology is a powerful thing.

I honestly wouldn't suggest anyone on this board to be wasting money on expensive wine.

Im not a wine connoisseur but back when I was in the Navy and traveling the world occasionally wine would be recommended with dinner in various places. Usually when eating pasta based dishes in Italy and in Saint Martin (Island in the Caribbean) on the Dutch side of the island.

Usually In both of these instances the wine that was recommended was a local wine that was just a couple years old. I always liked it and it was reasonably priced.
