I kind of like the idea of the Machete Order (4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6) for folks who have seen them, though 1-6 straight wouldn't be a bad way either.

For a first time watcher, anything other than 4-5-6-1-2-3 is a mistake.

If you're rewatching, it doesn't really matter. I personally would do the same as above if I were to rewatch them all in a row but I never do that.

I think that's kind of an inescapable spoiler. But in concept, yes, that's part of it.

But there's more to it than that too. It's also the written order, which affects more than plot twists and story reveals. In much the same way that a story sometimes has flashbacks, there are structural reasons that it makes sense for the OT to come first. For example, Obi-Wan reminisces about his friendship with Anakin and Anakin's murder of at the hands of Darth Vader, which is initially taken at face value and then later in ESB described as a bit more figurative, and finally explored in detail in AotC/RotS, this follows a logical structure of presenting more detail/nuance as the story advances. ANH Obi-Wan is retroactively characterized as remembering his friend the way he chose to.

As one example.

Yeah, 3 spoils the original trilogy. For example the "No, I am your father" line in 5 would lose its impact if you had already watched 3 beforehand.

Honestly Im mostly talking shit. Im a very casual Star Wars fan. Im just an older guy stuck in the past that grew up on the original trilogy. I thought they were good movies but I was never fanatical about them.

For my legit opinion Im not even really informed enough about the new stuff as Ive only seen them once and havent even seen them all. I really did though think 1,2,3 were fairly poor though. For all the hype when 1 was coming out I thought The Phantom Menace was bad. Attack of the Clones wasnt much better. Never watched Revenge of the Sith because after the previous two I just didnt care.

I got pulled back in and I did think 7 and 8 were decent movies but again Im a casual fan and Im just not that invested in the series and I just dont enjoy them as much as I enjoyed the OT when I was a kid. I never even watched 9 and heard people grumbling about it.

And some of the non mainline stuff? Everyone raved about Rogue One and I wasnt really into it. I never watched the Solo movie.

Ultimately I know Im just not invested in the story and wont watch anything going forward. Ill always enjoy the OT though and think Empire Strikes Back is the best movie in the series.

For someone experiencing it all the first time, release order is best.

Otherwise, chronological order works as well.

It's more powerful for new viewers to watch 6 at the end. They're bawling when they see Hayden Christensen pop up. Also gives more impact to Yoda and the Emperor since we spent 3 movies getting to know them better.

So with that said, I'm clearly a machete fan. Chronological is good too.

But for my genuine watch order of the series it's:

Theatrical Star Wars (1977), theatrical Empire, then the entire series shows and all in chronological order, including upgraded versions of 4 and 5 (I watch fan edits that go even further than Lucas's special editions).

Instead of full machete, could put the prequels in the middle of Jedi, after Luke and Obi-Wan's scene on Dagobah, almost like he's relaying the story to Luke and finally coming clean. Not only keeps the big reveal in Empire a surprise, but also the one from that scene in Jedi. Then the only major out of order reveal is the Emperor's capabilities (which were hinted at by Yoda's warning) and keeps the happy ending.

4, 5, 6, then one of those prequel edits that's able to condense the whole thing into a 2 and a half hour movie by keeping the few good ideas and removing the stupid shit like the majority of The Phantom Menace, the factory scene in Clones, and any time Yoda takes out a lightsaber.

456123 is probably best for a new viewer, followed by the books covering the dark empire/deep core stuff.

Because as much as some of the stuff like that, and later the Vong, can be... well, look. The Eclipse and the Galaxy Gun are by far preferable to the absolute mess that is the sequel trilogy. So I would actually just recommend NOT watching the sequels and to stick with the old extended universe stuff.

The Xyston is basically in the same ballpark of stupid as the Sun Crusher, even if its a little less extreme (the Sun Crusher basically being a god-mode Slave 1 in size and orientation that can literally destroy star destroyers by flying THROUGH them and being essentially indestructible, oh, and it also has a special torpedo capable of making a star go supernova because of course it does).

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It is so they understand what the heck SW is about, if you try watching for the first time the PT first you have no clue on what the hell a jedi, the force, or anything is.

Some idiot actually did have a brand new never seen SW person watch TPM first and after 10-20 mins they were confused, annoyed at not understanding why, and what. It just proved the point release order ONLY for new people. This person was almost completely turned off of SW because of the idiot doing that and I cant blame them for being upset about all the confusion.

The person was shown ANH and they enjoyed it and kept on with the saga but they were annoyed any just being thrown in for EP 1 not having a clue where ANH did get to explaining things.
