I originally made it to the final dungeon but got beat by a Tomberry and lost 40 minutes of progress and put the game down and never got back around to it. I made this topic a few weeks ago and finally set up my Switch and re-downloaded FFVII only to find that I never backed up my save so I'd have to start all over again.

No, you already got through most of it. If you still had your old save, I'd say go ahead and beat it. But you don't, so just start Remake.

You have to start all over as in.....your save file in general never backed up (as in you have absolutely zilch/nada/zero/nothing in comparison to losing 40 minutes of progress)? If you don't have your save file period then screw that. You already made it that far on your own so you might as well just youtube the final fights and cutscene of the OG game.

I really wouldn't bother.

It's a like 30 hour timesink in order to catch ~2 hours of game where you already know what happens.
