Mostly preference but definitely get them spayed/neutered.

Males that aren't neutered can spray their territory and that's not fun to have around your house.

I've had both separately and I've had both at the same time and they are both pretty similar other than size.

There are less problems if they've been fixed. Just mix up their food a bit (not just dry food) and it's an easy thing to fix. My male cat had 1 UTI and I caught it super early & never had it happen again.
