It reels you in to start with this really cookie cutter shonen promise. Cute kid off on an adventure to find dad and become the best ultimate warrior whatever. Here's his lil gang of friends to tag along.

And then with each arc it just goes insaneo style and subverts everything. There's cosmic horror, politics, psycho murderers, monster gore. Wtf even is Hunter X Hunter?

Togashi is an enjoyable author. I really enjoy HxH, because he clearly takes influence from other Shonen, but his attempts at subverting conventions dont feel forced. Sometimes when I read stuff, I get the feeling that the author is really trying to avoid the obvious, but I dont really feel that way with Togashis writing. He doesnt often go with the obvious, but it doesnt feel forced. Arcs tend to lead into each other, and I feel as if the characters and story fit together very well.

Back, but it's also crippling anxiety and a terrible lifestyle. He's admit the pressure of high expectations keeps him from drawing more because it makes him physically ill from anxiety. He also lives like this:

Recently rewatched with a friend after several years, Chimera Ant arc still holds up strong but the other arcs are less enjoyable when you know whats coming.
