$90 for the Demon's Souls remaster. Basically a tech demo painted over dated PS3 gameplay. Should be $25, maybe $15 on sale.

$93.49 for FF7 Rebirth, which is only 1/3rd of the game. $40 would be somewhat reasonable.

$90 for a freakin' VISUAL NOVEL on the Switch

And controllers being $100 each now when they aren't even good

Video games used to be a cheap hobby

prices were stagnant from the mid-to-late 90s up until like 2015 tho

nowadays most everything is discounted to half price two months after release and there are many different starting price points depending on the game, whereas you used to pay $60 regardless of whether it was licensed shovelware or a long-awaited AAA release

also, it was never a cheap hobby

What country? In the US, games had been $60 for over 20 years, so the increase to $70 for some games makes sense. It is still a cheap hobby for time per dollar.

Games are absolutely cheaper today. SNES games were similar to today's prices and inflation is probably up 2 to 3 times since then.

NES games were routinely $35 to $45 in the late 1980's

$40 in 1989 is $101.42 in 2024.

So, when compared to inflation, $70-80 for a game is a decent value.

$70 is too much for video games. $60 was a reasonable sweet spot with indies ranging from $15-$20. Now more indies are launching at $30 which is also kinda crazy.

I can buy a new guitar pedal for the price of a new video game nowadays. It definitely isn't the cheapest hobby to have anymore.

That's for new games though. If you absolutely must buy all your games at launch then it could get expensive depending on how many you buy but there are lots of good deals on games if you're willing to wait.

Yeah, I remember the last time we actually had a price increase until recently was the PS2 Gen to PS3. Games went from $50 to $60. Yeah, they added DLC that gen too, but even then gaming is pretty cheap especially if you just wait for a sale.

Videogame prices have always been high relative to their time. Corporations have just got greedier so it's harder to afford them like we used to. Can't buy a $70 game all willy nilly when rent and food keeps going up while wages don't.
