Free-to-play mobile game Monopoly Go has been a surprising success story in the mobile space, coming out as 2023's most successful mobile launch with $1 billion in revenue. Developer Scopely has revealed in an interview that the game has now brought in over $2 billion in its first 10 months--and that the company has spent an eye-watering $500 million on marketing and user acquisition.

To put the $500 million marketing budget in perspective, a poorly redacted document last year leaked a set of budgets for some of PlayStation's biggest AAA titles, which revealed that The Last of Us Part 2 cost $220 million to develop, and Horizon Forbidden West cost $212 million to develop.

The mobile market is certainly where the money is.

I guess the good news is that technology has become sufficiently sophisticated that tiny studios can pump out incredible games without this garbage.

Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley, Outer Wilds - the games industry is in safe hands if this stuff is possible.

Monopoly Deal is a blast, we play it pretty regularly still. It's a fun, quick card version of the game that's easy to learn and you can get games done in 10 minutes.

Traditional console gaming continues circling the drain with every lazy or broken release, mobile trash exploits people and gets all the money so they are incentivised to make more mobile trash. Video game industry is in such a sad state.

2 bill seems far more reasonable than 10. Keep in mind this is gross profit, before all expenses. the article cites 500mil on marketing alone, thats pretty insane.

It's been at or near the top of the highest grossing apps for a while. It's effectively a clone of another ridiculously profitable game called Dice Dreams.

Gameplay consists of rolling dice to loop around a board. You level up buildings along the way while triggering random events and mini games, like sabotaging other players. Once all your properties are max level you move to a new board where you do the same thing again.

Far from the worst thing I played for reward points but it had about a dozen ways to spend money on it. Incidentally, one of the worst things I've played for rewards was Star Trek Fleet Command, also by Scopely.
