This is the most annoying thing about gamers complaining about length

turn up the damn difficulty! There are so many games that people complain are short and easy, but that have extremely hard difficulty modes that could double the amount of time the game takes

Tbf a lot of that discussion was dominated by games like the COD campaigns and the various other third party titles that had cheap budgets and gimmicky. That's not to say there weren't a good amount of shorter games that were excellent but back then GTA was one of the only single player non RPG series that had long play times until Ubisoft decided to make all of their games massive grind fests and then everyone else followed suit.

If that were true, your average U isoft game would be like a quarter as "long" as cited since 3/4 of time time is just picking up random meaningless collectables ad nauseum.

I wish games were shorter

You get all these games now that are 80 hours long even if you never reload an old save once and it just sucks so much ass

I just see don't see the value in speedrunning a game on the first playthrough.

Why would you NOT spend some time looking around and getting used to the game world, or see if stuff reacts to being kicked, or read all the NPC dialog? Seems like a miserable way to play the game.

Oh, I thought you just meant you died a lot. No, I agree. Though I stop to smell the daisies in FF9 every time, and it still tops out at 40 hours. Friggin Game Informer told me it would be double that. Not that I'm complaining much, the pacing is good.
