Conclusion
The TV/film industries are profitable to the global economy and protecting their intellectual property is important to innovation and growth. Notwithstanding, evidence from this study suggests that a third of the population admits to pirating TV/films and a fifth of the population believes that piracy does no harm to society. This indicates that a message that challenges attitudes could be an important intervention in combatting piracy. Our results show that pro-social, educational messages tend to be an ineffective intervention in reducing piracy intentions. This may be caused by the survey delivery method of the message in this study and more research is needed to test the effect of more engaging educational messages on piracy attitudes and behaviors.

This study suggests that the group who pirate the most frequently (men with favorable attitudes towards piracy) is also the group who react the most negatively to threatening messages, suggesting the presence of psychological reactance. The message that caused the most reactance (Crimestoppers) in this group was the most detailed in terms of technical risks. The authors speculate that the level of detail induces reactanceas there is more information to disagree withpriming confirmation bias. More research is needed to test nuances in risk messages and to compare whether the level of threat or the level of detail influences reactance in men with favorable attitudes towards piracy. The results of this research indicate that by targeting threatening anti-piracy messages, particularly the Graduated Response message, carefully at women, they may be effective in decreasing overall piracy.

reddit summary:

Anti-piracy messages can cause people to pirate more rather than less, with gender differences. One threatening message influences women to reduce their piracy intentions by over 50% and men to increase it by 18%, finds a new study.

You say that men with favorable attitudes towards piracy are the same group that pirates most frequently? Glad we took the time to study this

but that requires effort and work when you could just effortlessly throw DRM at something and then sell user data to make more money

I generally don't pirate, mor do I have anything against people who do but the people who pirate also tend to act as paying consumers and expect their wants for the content they are buying to be met as well as expect the content to continue to be made.

That doesn't always end up panning out.

this doesn't seem too surprising to me

like, imagine you buy a movie or whatever, sit down to watch it, and the very first thing you see is a big screen-filling message that essentially says "lol you could be watching this for free instead, loser"

Of course piracy doesn't cause harm to society. It's one of those things where the rights holder has every right to go after and try to prevent piracy, but it comes across as kind of silly when all piracy does is increase the popularity of your product out in the world.

People who pirate anime and manga will still buy merchandise. People who pirate movies can go online and talk about how much they liked the movie.

It's a similar principal to a game that's free-to-play. Some players literally never pay money into the game, but the added player count and word of mouth still benefits the game more than if those players had never played it at all.

Do people even pirate movies any more? I just assumed it went away when people stopped wanting to own DVDs and we all switched to streaming.

Like, I've bought perhaps 10-15 movies in my life, but the last of those was more than 15 years ago.

People that pirate usually wouldn't have bought the product in the first place. There is no lost sale.

There are plenty of illegal streaming sites out there.

Makes sense to me.

Years ago before Youtube and music streaming was a thing, I was big into downloading music on a P2P file sharing site called Soulseek.

There were plenty of times where I really liked an album that I had downloaded so I searched it out and bought it on vinyl.

Pirating these days isnt going to sketchy torrent sites and trying to pick the one legit torrent out of the 30 fake ones. You just open your browser or switch your hdmi to your $30 android stick and go to 123watchnetlixhbofreemax.com watch whatever you want in 1080p with no ad interruptions.

Making things more accessible is what stopped me pirating in 2017. Movie pass, along with streaming services and VOD led me to stop pirating altogether.

There were like 3 reasons I pirated stuff, no commercials, instant viewing(no reason to get up, grab a DVD set and insert a disc and then choose the episode), and the availability of everything, so I didn't need to wait for a DVD box set to rewatch a show or movie.

It was basically the accessibility of everything. Now that nearly everything is near readily available, I feel no need. I probably pay like 40 a month to avoid pirating and honestly, I'm fine with that.

Ah. So the same word applies here? Got it.

Like, I'm rarely taken in by hype to the point where I must watch a specific movie. I just open my watchlist and pick something from there. No big deal if Netflix doesn't have whatever the latest fad is. Most people have hundreds of hours of material on their watchlist, and I probably watch 2-3 hours of TV per week, so I'm not exactly short of stuff to watch - I'll literally never get through it all.

I see. In my day piracy meant getting a CD/VHS/DVD of the latest album or movie

Spending effort to tell people that they could get your product for free, but they shouldn't do that because reasons when your product is made intentionally non-user friendly really shouldn't be a surprisingly reveal that more people end up pirating it.
