They come and go and take different forms.

You mention "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" but as an 80s kid, while that movie was popular for kind of edgy and your parents didn't want you to watch it (along with Porky's), teen movies like Teen Wolf, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, and Ferris Bueller's Day off were more popular with their PG ratings and more fantastical elements.

The 90s... didn't have a lot of theatrical teen comedies that I can remember even as a teen in the 90s... we hated most of them and they mostly missed. You had a bunch of total bombs with execs trying to shove garbage movies with bad actors like Pauly Shore down our throats.

The late 90s and 2000s had the Disney Channel and Nick etc... pumping out "teen movies" that were geared to teens and kids with much more family friendly themes and situations.

In the 90s I loved ragging on Shore, and Sandler movies, it was as like they got at least 1 comedy a year there. But the fact is, I really liked the two movies that shoved them into the forefront, Encino Man, and Happy Gilmore.

Why would studios want to take a risk on mid budget movies that arent part of an established franchise when they could just reboot Spiderman for the 10th time

Theres no reason for theatrical comedy anymore; no real benefit to anyone

the major benefit was you could do things you couldnt do on TV, and now you can do whatever you want on streaming services. And now the writers dont have to leave a ton of jokes on the cutting room floor or stretch a thin plot thats just a vehicle for jokes to 90-120 minutes

I would argue Sex Lives of College Girls is basically what one would expect from the teen comedies of old

Rawkus sex comedies in general (teen or otherwise) are dormant at the moment, aside from a few notable exceptions like that Jennifer Lawrence one last year.

But like Torgo says, they tend to come in waves and sit out every other decade, so they'll probably be back.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

No it doesnt

30 minute/episodic is an ideal format for comedy

drama and horror often fit well within a 2 hour film framework where tension and drama can build over time

sci Fi, action, fantasy obviously benefit from the bigger budget that come with film

this is unique to comedy, which is why you often see topics lamenting the death of feature length comedy

SoiledSnake posted...
Could American pie be made today?

Just saw this. But nah, I don't think the exact movie would be made today. But something similar could by the same director. He's the one that did other America Pies, Nutty Professor 2. The cam scene would definitely get dropped.

I've heard the sentiment that edgy comedy movies are dead from several people now. Check out Bad Trip with Eric Andre from 2021; it's EXACTLY that and is offensively hilarious.
