Obviously there's the fact that firing Barrera was utter, utter bullshit, and it's soured this flick before there was even a script, and so wanting Barrera and Ortega to be back as the leads is a matter of principle in and of itself, but even putting this aside, it feels like Scream is Sam's story now. The old guard have had their sendoff, and their story is done. Even in the fifth film before all the exec's really unsavoury antics happened Sidney felt weirdly out of place compared to the rest of the cast (as did Gale to a lesser extent - Dewey was the only one of the original Core Three who felt like he still belonged in the series), and while Sid wasn't in 6, Gale felt really out of place compared to the rest of the cast. When five was announced I really didn't like the idea of focusing on a new cast and starting the process of reducing the role of the originals. Now I really don't like the idea of them going back.
