Don't know about it being a top tier ending, but I liked it. It makes sense.

It is one of the best. And it's also a good indicator of IQ level.

it took me a while to appreciate it, but while I enjoyed the buildup from the last few episodes, and the execution, I think that I would still disagree.

People complain about it and throw shade at it but its definitely got some deeper meaning in it and it did what a definite ending wouldn't have done:

Have it talked about for years and years to come.

Its so memorable and that's why Sopranos is considered one of the best series in television. Because from start to end it didn't drop its quality so terribly and had a perfect ending as a bookend.

I love how any time you disagree with anyone, they're instantly a kid. Someone definitely needs to grow up, it's just not who you think it is.

The Sopranos ending was basically the epitome of a cop out. The writers knew they couldn't please everyone and they weren't sure if they wanted to keep the door open for a sequel or not.

Granted, it's pretty obvious that he got hit.

The uncertain ending is so much better than a slam bang ending where everything wraps neatly into a bow.

Yeah probably to a degree, but given Sil's delayed reaction when Gerry Torciano is hit and Tony and Bobby's conversation in the boat that's later shown again at the end of the penultimate episode "You probably never hear it when it happens...", and how the last scene shows Tony's POV multiple times, it's not a huge stretch with what they did. It totally fits.

And with how The Many Saints of Newark turned out, it's good we didn't get an actual sequel to the show.

I prefer to read the ending as:

It doesn't matter if he lived or not. He won against New York. But at best, he is now a walking dead husk. Most of his allies are gone, he's up for indictment thanks to Carlo Gervasi and his dimwitted son, his kids are tainted by his life, and he is closer to the living embodiment of his mother than he knows. Any enlightenment that he found in the desert or in his coma dream are gone.

Basically = Was the ride worth it?

While I'm of the opinion that Tony is killed, the ending can work both ways which shows why it's great. You're right in that it really doesn't matter. Tony is dead either way.
