hopefully this version won't be made into a generic swashbuckler like the other, more recent one

I actually like that one. The book is the best version, but I also really like the Gankutsuou manga and anime, and the 2002 film.

Cool. Would be great if it gets a wide release.

I don't fuck with Overland Park so if it's not wide release I'll have to wait for streaming :/

to each their own, but I feel like it ignored the themes of the book so much that it should have been its own thing.

I did like Gankutsuou, though, since it at least reframed the story, and made something interesting with it.

tbh, I'm not familiar with Overland Park, but if it has a good reception, and it doesn't have a wide-release, I might buy it when it comes to Blu-ray/digital.

I thought the movie from 20ish years ago was actually decent. I'm intrigued by this new French version, it will definitely feel more authentic.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the original book by Dumas released chapter by chapter in a magazine or periodical of the time? He purposely added more "fluff" to get more money and keep people interested. The end result was a book that could be cut down a lot and had a ton of condensed versions.

Ever read The Stars My Destination? I haven't, but I hear it's also pretty well-regarded, and that it did The Count of Monte Cristo in space decades ahead of Gankutsuo (and served as an early prototype for cyberpunk, to boot).

yea, if you read the unabridged book (I think there are multiple versions), there are entire segments dedicated to side content, that can feel like it goes on forever.

iirc, when I first started reading it, I almost dropped the book because it was going on way too long on the romantic story of some side characters.

with that said, even if you strip it down to its more relevant parts, it felt like the Jim Caviezel version missed a lot of the point, which is why it's my least favorite version of the story.

I've only read the first few chapters, and while I enjoyed what I read, besides the lead wanting revenge, it feels different enough from TCoMC that I wonder how it was influenced by it.

I think he brought it up because Gankutsuou was going to be an adaptation of that, but they copyright holder wouldn't allow it, so it went to Count of Monte Cristo instead.

They always cut out the lesbian and trans stuff, though.

Took forever to find a physical unabridged version.
