Minecraft isn't really a fair comparison because the world is procedurally generated. Only reason it even has a measurable size is because the algorithm starts to break down past that point.

Daggerfall was also procedurally generated, btw. Which is how it's even bigger than Skyrim.

That said, I'm pretty sure there are some open world games larger than BotW/TotK.

TC is presumably talking about Hyrule as it appears in Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom.

If we're counting just Hyrule and not the underground:

Everything from around 3:08 on is bigger than Hyrule

If we're counting procedurally generated games and things like that, wouldn't the actual record be held by elite: dangerous which claims to have a one-to-one sized Milky Way galaxy to explore?

How big was Spore?
The original Elite originally had approximately 282 trillion galaxies with 256 solar systems each. However, the publisher was afraid that such a gigantic universe would cause disbelief in players, and eight of these galaxies were chosen for the final version.

Google says spore had roughly 42,000 solar systems you could visit.

For comparison, Google says the Milky Way has close to 4k solar systems. However, the Milky Way has about 300 billion stars. Every Star in spore has at least eight planets, so while spore would have more solar systems, elite would have more celestial bodies.

No, still Procedurely generated. There is really no form to it at all. The star interface is like just being able to pick minecraft worlds. The fuel requirement prevents you just picking one at whim.

Now elite dangerous is about half accurate. It's procedurely generated but its had the known positions of stars in the milky way plugged in the algorithm. The drawbacks was the engine didnt have anything but stars. Stations were hand placed, a secondary algorithm were added for planets but there's only 4 planet types and now atmospheres. That didn't come till odessy and then it's a skybox change according to planet type.

When it comes to space games, you also need to consider whether things are to scale. Sure you can say there's a whole galaxy to explore. But is there actually a physical expanse of nothingness between celestial bodies?
