Half the terms Hebert used (muad'dib, gom jabber, shai-halud, etc) were Arabic.

Yes. Its basically the pillar of Pauls story as far as Frank was concerned, because the reason he wrote Dune in the first place was to basically say putting your faith in charismatic leaders will inevitably lead to disaster. Never mind that Paul basically drives himself crazy trying to prevent it, and did everything he could short of just lying down and resigning himself to he and his mother dying and his family going extinct.

Probably the biggest historical event prior to the events of Dune is the Butlerian Jihad, in which humanity overthrew the technological overlords who were enslaving them and banned "thinking machines" (computers and AI).

It is also called jihad when the Fremen overthrow their oppressors and destroy the galactic empire in Paul's name.

Herbert himself used the term in a very nuanced way--that the violence is obviously terrible but sometimes is the only way for oppressed people to overcome imperialism and even greater violence of their oppressors.

However, he also only uses the term in relation to violent conflict, which plays into the general perception people in the west have of only seeing the term as meaning this. The term is actually very broad and refers to all kinds of struggle or overcoming hardship. So I can see why they might have thought it was better to avoid the word in that context.

Part 2 takes a huge crap on the faces of book fans who were holding out for the (as it should have been) bonkers, confusing, hysterically complex lore nuke that was Part 2 -- on paper.

No Leto II, No Jihad, no toddler fighting like a space marine in the battlefield, no poison dagger, wrong person kills the emperor, Jessica is now an entirely invented character, Shani rewrites, NO NAVIGATORS, NO SPICE GUILD

Sigh. Someday, SOMEDAY, a faithful adaption.

The possibility of the Fremen engaging in a universal jihad that kills tens of billions in Paul's name is literally the one of the biggest things in the book and potentially more dangerous than even the Harkonnens and the Emperor.
