North Carolina State Senior Owen Lloyd posted the fastest time in the men's 1650 yard Freestyle, earning him the ACC Title, an automatic entry to the National Championships, and a new best time. Moments later, an announcement was made that Lloyd had been disqualified for "interference with another swimmer."

The rule(s) at play from the NCAA rulebook: - Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1a: "Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee..." - Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1b: "A swimmer who changes lanes during a heat shall be disqualified."

In his celebration he accidently fell into another swimmers lane. Both swimmers had already finished so it did not affect the result in any form but the race was still technically going on.

So technically he "changed lanes during a heat"

Owen and his fans are pissed.

What does CE think?

If that's true, its a BS ruling. If the other swimmer was still swimming, then I'd agree with it.

This is like charging a surgeon with assault for making a standard incision during a surgery.

On the most base technicality it makes sense but only if you are going out of your way to be an obtuse **** waffle who hates everyone and everything and torture the words to the breaking point after erasing the very concept of context fron your mind.

No point in them ignoring the rule, only for it to get overturned by the governing body.

Weird. I don't believe anyone was disputing that the stupid, bullshit rule exists. The proper response from the NCAA would have been to use their brains and not enforce it.

Actually, by the time he fell in the other lane, everybody had, indeed, finished. But the race technically isn't "over" even when everybody has finished. Thus, he was punished on a technicality.

EDIT: Actually, no, I guess technically one swimmer hadn't touched the final wall yet. They apparently touched it very shortly after.

Looking into it further, the rule he broke is actually flimsy.

ARTICLE 1. a. Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee.

The reason there's uproar about it is the "Subject to discretion" part. He, objectively, did not interfere with another swimmer. It doesn't say anything about crossing lanes, it specifically says "interfere with another swimmer." The referee chose to disqualify him based on their "discretion" of an extremely flimsy rule.

It remains unclear exactly how officials feel that Lloyd broke the rules. The folks at Swim Swam, a popular swimming blog, pulled up the ACC rules on the decision and its a little unclear how Lloyd actually violated the rules.
ARTICLE 1. a. Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee.
The issue is that Lloyd didnt interfere with another swimmer, because Dant had already finished as well. He also didnt jump into the lane of another team, as the two are both teammates on the NC State swim team. There is nothing in the rules that addresses moving into the lane of an opponent who has finished competing, but while other swimmers were completing the race.

Basically, the ruling is highly suspect.

I think it depends on what the rule is for. The way its worded makes sense if his interference actually interfered with another swimmer. That swimmer was already done, however (Most were by the time he finished). And finished second place, no less. So, the rule doesnt even make sense in this context since he didnt actually interfere with any other swimmers, which is what the rule it used for

There is literally no rule against crossing lanes of a swimmer who has finished. The rule, in writing, is ONLY:

ARTICLE 1. a. Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee.

He, objectively, did not interfere with another swimmer. The entire controversy is that the referee decided to apply the rule per their discretion, and nobody can understand why.
