The term deadname comes from the historical precedence of police/media / family who misgender and deadname trans people after dying (suicide, murder, etc)

There is also historical precedence for trans people and members of the LGBTQ+ community being targeted for harassment, assault, and murder under the auspice of dating (which continues to this day)

I'd imagine the justification for that is going by whats on file officially their name and sex. And while I can kinda understand that I feel a compromise could be. Bring up the dead name and sex initially but then say they preffered x name and pronoun then roll with that rest of the article.

Anyways this is fucking horrible. Sounds premeditated

This was a man intending to pick up another man. Since the article says the alleged killer already had a GF I'd speculate this was luring someone into premeditated murder.

Yeah, this is what it sounds like to me. Joshua (the killer) had been talking to Jacob for about a month online before they went on the date to Carrowinds. The killer even went to pick up the victim from his job. Probably planned to murder him before they even met. This was from an article back in July 2023:

Williamson was last seen leaving his job with a man who he had been talking to online for around a month. They were reportedly going on a date to an amusement park several hours away. Williamson had shared his location with Edwards, who noted that it was pinging all over the place, but police could not find Williamson in any of those locations. His body was finally recovered near a road on July 4th. Police have taken two suspects into custody the man who picked Williamson up in his car, and a woman who is suspected to have aided the man after he committed the murder.

On the plus side, I have noticed that most of the articles that come up now via google have the correct name (sadly a few still deadname though). One even acknowledged that they made a mistake in an Editor's Note:

Historically and culturally its more of an issue of transphobia and trans erasure. Trans identities not being given any weight, or treated seriously or respected; something to be mocked and derided, like a joke, or costume, deception, mental illness.

I can see that too but it's probably not always the case. The media has to go off the info they are given. I'm pretty sure if the info comes from the police they default to what's the legal name and whatever. I'm not disagreeing cops can be bigoted. But having worked in a prison I know we always go by legal name on any official paperwork whether we agree with that or not cause it's just how it currently how it is with the way it all operates. Like I've only dealt with one trans inmate and really had no dealing with her outside processing her in but her id definitely had her deadname. And it's kind of the same as if I had a inmate that went by Bill but his legal name was William I had to put William on paperwork.

Legal name changes should be a little cheaper imo. I've wanted to change my name but I don't feel like paying that price.

But this is derailing the topic at hand of a terrible thing that happened. Partially my fault I'm fully aware.
