MPV's gpu-next renderer is objectively the most efficient and highest quality. I've spent hours comparing players at their best settings using idol concert footage and MPV is definitively the best. Also has the fastest seeking

Why would I bother setting up a server with an inferior backend and go through the process of loading up some app when I could just click on my mkv file and get to watching right away?

Plex is way better than all that shit, with the exception of VLC in very specific circumstances

this is just another windows 8 start screen is the GOAT tier logic topic

An HDMI cable right into the TV with superior upscaling beats unnecessary streaming apps

VLC is low quality trash

This has nothing to do with personal preference. Video rendering is a very objective thing

theres 0 reason at all to use anything other than Plex, except for if you need to open an obscure file type/encoding which is why you would use VLC instead. Youre allowed to be wrong TC, which is what you are despite your protest

MPV can open any type of file VLC can, and play it better, with much faster seeking.

If you want an unnecessarily complicated setup you can use plex(which uses MPV as its backend, I just learned). I'll just use an HDMI cable and not need to go through some app over my network.

potplayer nagging for updates all the time makes it unusable. Good for watching VR porn rips, though.

I usually get better performance with MPC but mpv is more flexible. Smplayer is the only half decent GUI for it

Yep. And a specific version that I use. No nagging. No concerning network issues. Just works quickly, and the way I want it to with the controls I like.

hated mpv. something about the way it rendered videos and how it functioned. Really miss MPC-HC. Went back to VLC as I really don't watch much on my PC anymore and just need something that functioned well.

MPC-BE has mostly replaced it and has more active development. I wish the new video renderer by the same dev was included.

But if you want exotic next-gen playback or leveraging Vulkan, mpv is really the only option.

Why use Plex when my TV is literately next to my computer? Just run an HDMI from my computer to my tv.

plex is useful as a media library - keeping track of what you've watched, where you're up to with a tv show etc. Also useful if you have more than 1 tv, or tv not next to pc
