I was just talking with a coworker (a female) and we were on our 10 minute break when another coworker (a male) came.

We all greeted each other. He went and hugged her first, and then when he went to greet me he opened his arms as if he was going to hug me, so I went for the hug as it didn't seem like a big deal to me. We hugged for like a fraction of a second until he realized that he did a mistake while saying some dumb shit like "Pause man. My bad, idk why the fuck are we hugging. We ain't supposed to be hugging I ain't gay" all while doing some gesture of him cleaning himself. I just looked at him dumbfounded and said, it's just a damn hug man it's not that serious

Afterwards he greeted me with a dap saying how that's how we're supposed to greet each other and left to start his shift. I then turned around to my other coworker and asked her wtf happened? She was just laughing the entire time and just said that two guys hugging looks does look funny.

I just told her straight up how come you can hug another female and no one will think you're gay or how you can hug a male and no one will think that you're trying to get into their pants but all of a sudden if two males decide to hug then that means that they're gay and all the rainbows come out? Fuck out of here with that nonsense.

Then we dropped the conversation and went on with our lives, but that whole situation still got me thinking on why are we like this?

it's more of a cultural thing.

from what I've seen, from a number of African and European cultures, it's normal for men to hug, with guys kissing each other on the cheeks for some of the latter.

in the US, I've started to see more and more men hug with both arms, but it's usually the handshake/hug hybrid thing.

I haven't hugged other men so it does seem weird to me personally. I'm not saying you can't but I would feel uncomfortable if a man hugged me. Not because I think it's gay either, it's just not something I am accustomed to.

If other men hug each other, I won't say anything about that either. I just don't want men to hug me. And I'm generally against physical contact anyway, even from women. I remember once a female friend put her head on my shoulder and I looked at her like O_O

I always found it weird how the double cheek kisses are absolutely mandatory in Puerto Rico, for absolutely any girl introduced to you. I don't mind, but I can see how that would very troubling some people.

I mean not hugging another male because you are homophobic is bad. But covid is still a thing so you don't really want to unnecessarily hug people as it is kind of hard to maintain a safe social distance when you are hugging.

I get hugged more or less every day at work.

2nd poster covers it, but it's a cultural thing, not a man thing.

There's a lot of cultural things that might be off putting to somewhere else.

I usually just do the hug/handshake hybrid with dudes and hugs with dudettes >_>

While I don't doubt that some men have crappy views about hugging other men, I think hugging coworkers is weird unless the coworkers are close enough that they're friends outside of work or one returned after being away for a while (e.g. lengthy business trip or parental leave).
