I don't get why he couldn't have released one sooner or why he couldn't have just named that Detox.

Because he's a perfectionist and understood that what he had was never going to live up to the hype.

He manufactured that "hype" by needlessly delaying it over and over again.

"Perfectionist"? You'd think he wouldn't release any album at all, then. Instead he canceled it and released a "different" album as a consolation, lol that's not what a perfectionist does

Compton was well received anyway.

Would it really be received worse if it was named Detox? lol

Doesn't matter who manufactured the hype. It got so big he was never going to release it.

And Compton was released to coincide with the Straight Outta Compton movie. It didn't need to carry the legacy of The Chronic or 2001.

Yes I'm pretty sure it would have. It wasn't exactly received well by the fans.

It didn't get so big lol

The albums of bigger artists are more hyped than Detox ever was. They still come out. JT's album after FutureSex/LoveSounds was plenty hyped after he went on hiatus for 7 years and it was a smash. Adele's albums are always hyped and they're smashes. Y'all are overrating Dre's popularity.

This is a weird topic I know a strangely large amount of things about. It's a lot more complicated than him being a perfectionist. It's been an open secret for a long time that Dr. Dre doesn't really produce music or do any technical work outside of arranging and fine-tuning drums/drum patterns.

The people who have been ghost-producing for him have been getting old and not in-tune with the changing landscape of hip hop, so the Dre sound as a whole hasn't really evolved much even though there's been some attempts that ended up leaking years back. If you listen to a lot of leaked/reference tracks even as recent as the mid/late 2010s they sound like they could have been made a decade before.

The other huge issue is that the prospect of collaborating with Dre isn't as enticing or lucrative as it once was. The vast majority of his protoges and ghost-producers didn't go on to have successful careers, and working in that secretive and insulated environment holds their careers back. Also being associated with Dre at this point is irrelevant as younger listeners don't care.

It should have come out in 2011. Eminem was still plenty big as evidenced by the back to back successes of 2009's Relapse and 2010's Recovery album and he was on the song I Need a Doctor, which hit no.4 on the Hot 100 and was slated to be on Detox. Kush the previous year was also gonna be on Detox and it was also a hit single. With a few more hit singles, the album would have definitely gone multiplatinum.

Yeah, I was thrown off how Kush and I Need a Doctor weren't even produced by him. A lot of the songs on Compton weren't, either.

Compton is the last CD I bought. It now lives forever in my vehicle player and every so often I'll just fire it up. Great album.
