https://www.mmafighting.com/2024/2/12/24070956/seth-rollins-ronda-rousey-struggled-wwe-schedule-would-all-ufc-fighters-2-totally-different-worlds

As much as he respects the fighters competing in the UFC, Rollins feels like the arduous schedule required to perform in WWE would just be too much to handle.

As an example, Rollins invoked former UFC champion Ronda Rousey, who transitioned to WWE after her fighting career was over, however didnt work a full-time schedule filled with televised events, premium cards like WrestleMania, and weekly house shows where the promotion holds untelevised matches for local live crowds.

I dont want to knock Ronda Rousey because I love Ronda, Rollins told ESPN. She did a lot for our industry, for women in our industry and the fight industry in general, but it was tough for Ronda. She tried her damnedest and it was hard for her.

But I dont know, Id love for somebody to come over and take a crack if you think you can hang. But its hard.

Unlike many professional sports, there is no offseason for UFC fighters, so most train year-round but typically only set foot in the octagon two to three times per year.

Rollins understands MMA isnt easy, but he still argues its a different animal to put the kind of physical toll on your body that WWE requires for performers working a full-time schedule.

They dont have the stamina for it, Rollins said. They dont fight every single weekend.

This championship goes everywhere. It goes everywhere. It goes to like Biloxi, [Miss.]. And especially the top stars over there, theyre catered to a certain way, and thats great. Thats their style. Thats what works for them. You fight maybe once, twice a year. Youre crazy, youre fighting three times a year.

But to fight over 100 times a year, make all those towns, still be able to train, still be able to do all the media, its an exhausting industry.

I thought he meant actual stamina. He's just talking about traveling which he isnt wrong about. If you're a big time star like hogan, angle, Lesnar Austin etc you an call the shots and don't have to work house shows. But if you're mid card or lower your ass is on the road 300 days a year. Brutal. Real stamina mma fighter > wwe star

Literally every "real" athlete that has tried pro wrestling talks about how surprised they were at how hard it is and what wrestlers have to do and those guys were basically tourists for the most part.

I wouldn't argue with him, and he's a product of modern wrestling, where the travel schedule isn't as rigorous.

The wrestling grind from the "old days" reads like the most grueling job in the entertainment industry. Those guys had the road schedule of truck drivers, an intense gym schedule that they needed to maintain no matter how banged up they were... and then there was the actual nightly performance. It's no wonder so many of them were beyond fucked up and died young.

He's right, and it's funny how people will shit all day on pro wrestlers for not being "real" fighters/athletes, but god forbid they ever "bite back".

Remember during the pandemic when WWE stopped doing house shows and discovered they actually made MORE money w/o them and we thought the wrestlers would never have to work those arduous schedules again?

Circus Performers aren't constantly being punched and taking bumps

Rollins isn't wrong. Ask any athlete that has dipped their toes in pro-wrestling.

UFC fighters have a couple of fights a year. WWE wrestlers have a couple of matches a week and travel inbetween and while scripted that still wears down and destroys your body.

Hence why they're all addicted to pain pills.

Pro-Wrestling has reached this weird place where people used to think it was real and they didn't hurt each other. Now they actually hurt each other and everyone knows its fake.

People legit think being slammed on the floor and kicked in the face doesn't hurt because it was scripted.

I agree. Watch the Mayweather vs McGregor fight. Boxers train for stamina. McGregor lost because he got tired and Mayweather still had plenty of energy left.

Pro wrestling is hard, don't get me wrong. But do you know really, and I mean really, drains your stamina? Actual body blows and taking hits in general.

In MMA and boxing, fighters train for months on end to build up stamina to handle a handful of five minute rounds for the former or up to a dozen three minute rounds for the latter, and even at high levels most don't have the staying power to reach a decision due to getting their guts worked to hell and back

Put a WWE wrestler in the ring or octagon and they'll be gasping for breath after only a couple rounds, guaranteed.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

I will always not deny it is fake but scripted action has risks. How is it anymore dangerous than a stunt actor.

He's not wrong, it's just there's no superiority to be claiming.

Wrestling and MMA place different demands on a person. They train for what is required of them. You might as well criticize wrestlers for not taking full force punches and kicks to the head: that's not their job.

Yeah, he's definitely got a point. And athletes from other sports who transition to MMA say the same thing.

I remember seeing a video once where some dude with the Cardinals was doing some MMA drills with Benson Henderson (former WEC & UFC Lightweight champion), and after just a couple of them he was winded, because, as he explained it, he was used to a burst of activity and motion (10-20 seconds max average for one play), then stopping and resting for three, four, five minutes. But in MMA you go five minutes in a row.
