Those have existed since the very first Mario game on NES, they were just harder to pull off and the game crashed if you went over 99 lives.

Its obviously as soon as you see the enclosed space, but it just needs a reoccurring enemy to hit. Then when lakitu shows up it clicks, try to get lakitu to infinite spam spinies in the same vicinity that has a looping green shell.

The one from super mario 3d world was a godsend. I needed those 900 lives for the final bonus level.

I was doing that shell stomping on the stairs trick since I was like 6. Was the only way I could beat the original SMB1. Somehow I knew about this trick but not the fact you can continue from the world you game overed on.

SMB1 didn't crash, but if you went over 128 lives it would interpret it as a negative number and give a game over the next time you died.
