How about instead of being able to go anywhere in a vast landscape of nothing and do anything in a long list of shallow chores, we just do like a small handful of core things really well?

It's not even just big Ubisoft games anymore, it's indie farming sims too. Just saw that trailer for the Bustling World. Like now there's an expectation to have combat and stealth...in a farming game? Can't wait to pointlessly spam the same attack animation over and over again because the game wants me to fight people in combat for some reason.

What next? We gonna have FPS archery in the sims? Are we gonna have a racing game component to Hades 2? Just stop it >:/

Sigs are rather pointless, except if it's to showcase animation and images.

This isn't innovation, this is spreading development thin.

it's not innovation to have a puddle deep crafting system and a puddle deep stealth system and a puddle deep combat system on top of what could be an excellent city builder sim, especially when each of these systems is just a poor man's version of stuff that was already commonplace in each of their respective genres.

Sometimes this can be fun, as long as its treated as the gimmick that it is. Dave the Diver had a lot of these gimmick systems, and it treated it entirely as a gimmick. Like you do it once or twice and thats it. But if you have to go through an entire game repetitively doing a task that is just a chore and not fun because the game really wanted to boast about all these different things you can do, I think that's not fun.

Games becoming diluted and shallow is not moving forward, actually.

I agree, TC. I have been tired of every game wanting to be an massive open world game, only to have a magical gps leading you everywhere because different areas are so similar without any distinctive features such as unique topographical locales. Big empty spaces arent fun.

Off the top of my head, only Baldurs Gate 3 seems to deliver on the "you can do anything".
