Pretty sure that was Ecuador.

Bukele had already declared himself the winner in the race late Sunday, saying: Today, El Salvador has broken all the records of all the democracies in the world. Since democracies have existed, never has a project won with the quantity of votes that we have won today.

I wonder who he could possibly be cribbing this manner of speaking from.

The linked article makes him seem like he might lean a little to the right.

Seems pretty on-topic for the right-wing in general.

This story is one we've heard often before.

• Not from an established party
• Pulls popular viewpoints from both ends of political spectrum
• Heavy emphasis on crime and punishment

The last one continues to be a big issue with slight differences depending on where you go (some countries it's fear from perceived violence from migration for instance).

The existing parties or the center/left needs to find a way to combat stuff like this because it's clearly global, it's clearly potent, and it's clearly not going away, and people who can formulate/communicate solutions or take action to address it are going to keep reaping the electoral benefits.

I'm not really seeing much that he pulls from the left though. But yeah being tough on crimes works, when people need that they will sadly ignore how bad you are on social issues.

The results are clear. El Salvador was a violent shithole before Bukele.

El Salvador elected Bukele who implented harsh law enforcement which pretty elimated gangs from existing.

The people chose to re-elect Bukele due them feeling safe.

Its not hard to see why people vote differently than other countries such as ours when their circumstances involved seeing their friends and family being murdered regularly for not paying a hefty tax to the block gang.

People will indeed ignore social issues if their day-to-day lives are in literal danger from the horrors of gangs such as ms-13 who are known to execute with machets.

We still have people going against him that's the sad part. El Salvador is the safest country in all of the 3 Americas.

If other people wanna compete with these guys I think they're gonna need to walk and chew gum at the same time.

The center and left doesn't need to sacrifice social issues to effectively tackle crime, but it's definitely an issue they are weak on just about everywhere and they gotta figure out what to do about it
