I've heard it a fair amount of times on CE and on the gaming forums. I think it's kinda dumb. Like you're gonna present something then you should try to explain what that something is. Unless you're purposely tryna be vague. It's not exclusive to politics.

The right can't even defend their own horrid views. It's either that or they just lie their heads off.

Tbf it is actually good advice. People should, in general, be better about actually looking up stuff on their own. Not taking someone's word for something or relying on unreliable sources giving you bad information. More people should be more vigilant about researching things theirselves from credible sources.

It's a generic conspiracy theorist line. Flatearthers and ancient aliens and all sorts of believers of nutty shit will repeat it like a mantra and what they mean by "do your own research" is "read blogs from nutters who believe exactly the same stupid thing as you without any valid sources or scientific backing"

Hrm. I recognize it as a right wing thing now, but I associated it with the worse parts of the left 5-6 years ago. There was a lot of "it's not my job to educate you".

Yes, it roughly translates to

I almost exclusively see it as a leftist line. Along with.

"Its not my job to educate you" when asked to explain a position

On the flipside of this I've seen people horribly educating and informing others. Like if I'm ignorant of something and am trying to be informed, don't act all high and mighty and belittle me. Something like "OMG how can you not know about this?!".

When you finally posted a source in the Hogwarts topic it was completely irrelevant to your dumb argument.

Is that what you're talking about?

Do you own research is used by kooks and quacks.

They do it because their own sources are obviously shit, even they know it. So, by not mentioning it they shield their utterly stupid ideas from criticism.

They're cowards peddling stupid. It's a red flag.

Other red flags: gadsden flag, libertarian, centrist, both sides, I'm not a conspiracy theorist I'm a researcher, the term conspiracy theorist was concocted by THEM etc etc.

But not always. For instance, I don't *need* to do my own research to determine that the universe is billions of years old because there are already much better educated people who've already done that for me.

If you disagree, that's when it gets into conspiracy theory bullshit about the universe is really only 10,000 years old
>_>
