All Luke and the rebels did was defend themselves from a superweapon that had already been used to kill billions and was in danger of being used again. If anyone bears responsibility for those deaths then it would be the Emperor for ordering the construction of the weapon and Tarkin for staffing and firing it.

I blame Lyra Erso. If Lyra didn't come into Galen Erso's life, they would not have Jyn Erso. If it wasn't for Jyn Erso, they would never discover Galen Erso's deliberate plan to sabatoge the Death Star. If the plans were never discovered, the Rebels would not succeed and die at the hands of the Death Star.

Galen Erso.

He's the one who decided to rig the entire station to explode and kill everyone aboard. He could have rigged that reactor shot to just destroy the superweapon or something, had he wanted.

I'm not sure why they just didn't destroy the gas giant planet or at least stir up the atmosphere to consume the moon.

I blame Aunt Beru. She fed Luke processed Blue Milk throughout his life.

Humans are the only species where adults still drink Blue Milk. It's not natural. The added hormones and proteins degraded his DNA and turned him into a bloodthirsty religious extremist.

The Emperor and Tarkin both share blame. Of course Tarkin paid for it with his life.

The true blame belongs to the geonosians who designed the death star. It was a literal weapon of war that could blow up planets.

I love that Lucas himself was aware of this scene when he made the prequels that showed the Geonosians being given the Death Star plans.

It was a military installation, there was no evidence of civilians being onboard.

Because gamefaq is crazy about spoilers.

It's like, as soon as someone sees something and says "I didn't know that" , you can get modded, no matter how silly it is.

I got modded for calling an allied NPC fighting by your side in a early battle by name. An allied NPC who is introduced within the first 30 minutes of the game as your ally.

There were some spoiler about him for sure. Mostly that he died in that battle.
But also later on that he actually didn't die but survived.

In that case either the Emperor for building it, or Tarkin for sending it out to destroy planets and moons he doesn't like.

Luke being defending himself can't be responsible, and Vader for being unable to stop the attack on the Death Star can't be responsible either if it was the two above who caused the attack in the first place.

It's speculated that the superlaser would have had no effect on the gas giant. Or possibly would have taken the Death Star with it.

The Emperor=Tarkin>Other imperials

Rebels/Luke near no responsibility as it was self defense and everyone aboard was a soldier or acting in a military capability(I.E a engineer servicing a military weapon)

In addition destroying the Death Star would be justified even with staggering civilian casualties bevause the weapon destroys planets almost instantly. It killed hundreds of millions if not billions in one shot. Destroying that is pretty much the ultimate ends justify the means situation.

Thats reasonable to repair though. The whole thing blowing up means you gotta start from scratch while suffering enormous brain drain from losing a ton of your best guys. Its also a huge morale boost to rebels, morale loss for the empire.

Thats hundreds of billions if not trillions of credits, and damn near a whole planets worth of raw material, and a good ~decade of time which also takes a good deal of military might not fighting rebels to defend the site.

If the Death Star didnt blow the alliance wouldve taken many more years to succeed if it didnt simply get crushed.

Idk if it's legends or Canon, but I've heard the cost of the Death Star was Quadrillions of credits. As well as being done almost entirely in secret (material deliveries would be exchanged through several unknowing hands before making their way to the Death Star).

Still they are the ones directly responsible behind Palpatine who had them create it or asked for a super weapon.

So other then the Geonosians it is Palpatine who is at fault.
