I remember beating once with best ending and it was one of the most frustrating things in the world. I had to learn almost everything about the game including how to cheese some enemies. Having lesser inventory space sucked ass too. Jill was insanely easy since she gets the shotgun for free and a grenade launcher which pretty much made it a cake walk.

Haha, it sucked getting the broken shotgun which was on the other side of the mansion to bring there to swap for the working one as Chris. The game was a lot of trail and error for me.

Jill had access to the lockpick and extra inventory space. Chris got...a lighter.

Yeah, Chris was playing in hard mode for sure. In a game of inventory management, Chris' game just made for a bunch of extra backtracking and needing to carefully choose your final battle loadout. Always hated playing as him, and I'm very glad Capcom never did something like that again.

They did it with the Remake LMAO course they gave him the combat shotgun and grenades as counter attacks but that's about it. Also the inventory system sucked even more in RE0 but that's always been a charm in RE games. It's just a lot more bearable in more recent games.

Yeah, you're probably better off playing as Jill first just so you know where a lot of things are. With Chris you have to be more careful about planning your moves out ahead of time but your first time through you don't really have the information to do that without dying and restarting a lot.

Inventory management was always one of the more thrilling aspects of early RE survival horror when they were new. I'll always remember fumbling around, not know where to go or what key items I'd need in 1 through 3 and Code Veronica.

Chris also got increased health and meele damage.

But yeah, he was hard mode. Jill was easy

For sure. Inventory management has always been a part of RE's charm so it's funny seeing newer casual fans complain about it in newer RE games like it's something new. Same thing for the "tank" controls.

Yeah, and I was talking more from the perspective of approaching that game today. Back when it was made I think it was just expected that a new player would die and have to redo parts of the game with a better idea of how to approach them. That was just the normal gameplay loop.

I would not argue for a second that tank controls were "charming"

They were always a limitation of older games and modern games have good controls have had zero effect on making them atmospheric.

Tank controls are just bad dated design.... unless they're used for tanks lol

It's one of those things where it grows on you and you get used to it and realize it's part of the game and helps make it what it is.

Jill not only had more inventory space, she was also much faster and had a smaller hurtbox, allowing her to bait a zombie into trying to grab her and then run past it. Chris had more health and like a 20% chance to get a critical hit on zombies for a Insta kill. Both useless benefits considering ur likely going to engage In combat unless you must and youre already likely to be doing the old zombie grab bait anyway so no need for extra health

I don't recall this for the original RE. Maybe for the Director's Cut version but they definitely had this in the remake.

Yea but they were necessary for the pre-rendered backgrounds, which is what made the games so special for their time.

Remake is still one of the most beautiful looking games I've ever seen.

It was the best control scheme for a game with prerendered backgrounds that had to be made to work on a controller with no analog sticks.
