I enjoyed the first half. It was a very basic, but solid story about liberation and pushing back against oppressors. It completely changes half-way through. I'll say this: If you're a big anime/Final Fantasy fan, you'll still like it at that point... but it wasn't my bag. I can't get into the pretentious anime plots. I lost interest quickly and didn't even finish the game.

Not really? First 60% is fine, though kinda linear where it takes. You go to the places the game tells you you will go without any detours. That was a bit of a turn off for me.

But the game is still pretty good. And the best attempt to bring Tales games into modern gaming.

I have not played Tales of Arise. It may be different. I'd say this is a good indicator that you won't like the Tales series though.

I really liked the plot 2/3rds of the way in, but I was hoping it would keep pressing that direction and instead it veered elsewhere.

I was liking the plot in the 1st 3 areas. It started to drop off a bit after that, and took a big nose dive after the major twist happened.

Best description of the tales series Ive ever seen was shonen anime in video game form so yeah if you like shonen youll like this

now add in the fact that the main theme is overcoming slavery

Started off good, great even.

Then halfway they throw it all out and get stupid.

Tbh it reminded me of Xenogears. Not thematically or anything, but that the second half of the game quickly devolves into exposition dumps and asspulls to reach an unsatisfying conclusion. Heard it's a budget issue but idk. Fwiw i really liked it and 100%ed my run.
