I mentioned last week my sister went to my brothers house and when she came round mine after said she knew he had covid and went round anyway.

Well now we have a family get together tonight and hes going but says hes tested and is clear. But his wife is going who is Ill but they cant test. Its pretty obvious its fucking covid but they are going anyway. Then my mum messages dont worry I have a cold as well.

Just pisses me off. I have so much important work next week out of the office and cant afford to be Ill and everyone acting like this is going to be a chicken pox party.

Does no one care about protecting others anymore? Or is the FOMO brain virus making people do stupid things?

I work in an ER. (In a red state.) Anytime a patient tests positive for COVID, I have to put on a pink Daisy Duck mask and a nightgown to go and talk to them about their medication history. We've had so many COVID patients that we've actually run out of disposable isolation signs. Now, they're taping printer paper to the doors and writing COVID isolation warnings with a marker.

I don't what to say. Thanks antivaxxers for keeping the electricity on in my house?

Had a friend of the family who went to a funeral in Arizona. Her family there is very anti-vax. She came back home and came down with covid and gave it to her husband. Then she had a stroke, and then they found a hole in her heart (not sure this was covid related?).

My cousin had covid for almost 2 weeks recently and only took 3 days off from work cause he had that much vacation time left and then went to work the rest of it. Dont know if he was wearing a mask at work or not, but it was incredibly dumb of him.

At my nursing job we had a few cases, but none of the other residents were tested, but at least staff had to wear masks for around 10 days.

People are selfish and really dont care.

I got the updated booster a couple weeks ago for free from my city health department. Even got the free covid tests mailed to me around that time.

I don't know about other countries but I will say in the US, especially in the southeast, very few care, you will see the occassional mask and the folks wearing them look healthy so I assume they are being cognizant of those around them, but on the whole, it seems like no one cares. I attribute it to two things, one we live in a very selfish society, especially in America and I think their is an overall lack of understanding or knowledge about the risks and negative aspects of disease for most people because, again, especially in America, there are ton of willfully ignorant people.

It *is* super deadly. It's just that the average person isn't smart enough to understand that even the most extreme pandemics in history, of which Covid is absolutely on the list (in the top 5, in fact), don't have 90% mortality or something. Sort of a "but real life isn't like my movies!?!?!" affair where people cannot comprehend that pandemics are deadly because of the large numbers at play and not because they in particular are a dead person walking the second that they contract the disease.

You can look into the bacteria that is immune to basically all of our (and in one case, all of them) anti-bacterial medications. We already have the "something worse that no one actually gives a crap about."

Half the patients I saw during the height of delta variant deaths after vaccines were available still didn't give a shit about it

until I put them on a ventilator

at least two people asked me if they could have a vaccine before they were intubated, one later died.

One of many reasons I walked away from clinical practice: the worst part of medicine, any doctor will tell you, is the patients.

This has been the issue from the start. Ive been saying from the beginning that COVID was the perfect time to learn how to deal with not being able to go out. Learning new hobbies and how to be content with staying in.

Of course rather than do that, people would rather bitch and moan about muh rights and muh freedom!

Its not going away, as people said before, its going to be like the flu now. I think basically everyone will get it sooner or later.

The original 2020 version was also deadlier. The newer variants became more spreadable, but less serious.

I had it for the first time last month. It was weird, definitely feels different from a regular cold. I had a headache and it was slightly harder to breathe. The second morning with symptoms, I felt a but sick like I was going to throw up. I was of after sleeping. I had a bit of a cough, but didnt lose taste/smell.

I need to give a shit because wifey is immunocompromised and even though we're both multi-vaxxed, if she caught it -- from me or anyone else -- she could be severely ill and take a long time to recover (if she's lucky). So we have to live our lives, take the same precautions, pretty much as if it was still 2020, while nevertheless trying to function as normal people out there in the world. It's a difficult balance to achieve.

If she caught Covid from someone who was knowingly Covid-positive but didn't give a shit that they were infecting others, and the worst happened to her... Let's just say I would blame that person.

I don't know the official numbers but Covid is just not as severe anymore. Its rare that we see someone in the ICU purely for COVID pneumonia and nothing else contributing - out of the ones we do they are usually immunocompromised or they've never actually gotten it and never been vaccinated. Enough people have been vaccinated (multiple times) and have had it (multiple times) that heard immunity is likely taking effect. This is an expected progression of virus, this is what we thought would happen. The exception is if there happens to be tough strains any given year where the previous exposures/vaccines just aren't as effective. It will similar to flu in that there are ups and down years. Tbh if someone gets covid at we're evaluating them in the ICU, we look for other causes of low oxygen before pinning it on covid. Maybe I'm biased because I'm in california where 85% of people have received at least 1 shot, and where I work that number is probably higher, based on the assumption that people in central valley are probably less likely to be vaccinated.

I just searched the numbers to confirm my own observations:
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/us/covid-cases.html
As of the last 90 days, deaths in the US are 0.08 per 100,000 people. In California its 0.06 where 74% of people are fully vaccinated (at least 2 shots). Worldometers describes 0.5 deaths per 1mil in the US.
https://covid19.ca.gov/state-dashboard/
In california at least we have 0.03 deaths per 100,000 from mid august to mid october, with 0.4 per 100,000 hospitalization rate. And tbh most rapid tests are not reported and alot of people with mild symptoms aren't even bothering checking anymore.

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm
Flu deaths appear also to be 0.06 per 100,000.

I'm not saying covid doesn't matter anymore, but it really is becoming more similar to flu as time goes on. Its not the same beast it was early on. Source: I was an ICU doctor in the trenches from the beginning of covid.
