Former hockey player here.

It was almost certainly an accident. Incident's like this have happened before, this is just the first death at the professional level from a skate cut incident.

Scumbags on Twitter are only saying it was murder because Matt Petgrave is black.

From the looks of it, Petgrave was delivering a body check to another player, and was partially turned away from Johnson. He may not have even known he was there.

I'm not an ice skater, so I don't know how common it is to throw one of your legs up when delivering the blow, but to me it looked like Johnson just happened to skirt Petgrave to the rear right as his foot came up.

Yeah, I saw the play (I won't post it for obvious reasons) on Twitter after posting. I didn't get the best look since I was using my phone but it kinda looked like his skate hit another player's skate.

He lost balance and his leg went flailing.
It's a very fast game and unfortunately an accident like that erupted.

is there an involuntary manslaughter option? i dont believe it was an intentional murder. but it didn't look like a totally innocent hockey play either.

either way i hope to never have to see anything like that happen again. hockey is my sport but i hate to see this kind of shit go down. i want to believe that this was just some kind of fluke accident, but after watching the video its really hard to not be skeptical of it.

i still dont think the guy was actually trying to kill the guy. but still it looked like a pretty dirty play.

well he did lead the league for penalty minutes last season, and he's no stranger from being ejected from the game, so he's definately not the cleanest player in the game.

but that's not really going to prove what his intentions were on saturday night or anything.

if i was, i'd be sending some emails to gary bettman petitioning to make sweet chin music's legal in hockey or some dumb shit like that. though i would probably be throwing up in my mouth a little while sending it off.

i stand by my opinion. that was no murder or homicide, but it didn't look like a totally innocent hockey play either. now whether he threw up that kick just to stop the puck carrier, or to hurt him, we'll probably never get to know what the guys true intentions were. its just a shame that it happened.

anyone voting homicide is an idiot/concern troller. probably the latter because no one can believe this was on purpose. Literally no hockey player does this -- not only that, but lace up a pair of skates and just see how difficult it is to hit a guy in the neck with a skate while falling through midair

i didn't see it but like mentioned it's happened before. just other people lived from it. just a freak accident i'm sure. it is a dangerous sport. you can do a lot of damage with the stick or like this with the skates.

To act like this is normal hockey is outright weird.

You don't think what he did is out of this WORLD careless?

He has zero excuse for his skate to be off of the ice. Let alone NECK level.

He's somewhat off position for an old school hip style check. Then ABRUPTLY raises his skate up into the air and directly impacts his neck. That isn't normal and that kinda shit does not happen. Why on earth would he suddenly raise his skate up into the air? Theres no scenario where doing that would somehow help him do anything at all.

This is a disgusting level of carelessness. The world would have to be even more insane not to question wtf was going on there.

watching a slowed down clip of it it looks like the dude might have gotten kicked twice. and it looked like the dude was pushing off on him with the momentum like it was an olympic swimmer pushing off from the pool.

maybe i'm just tired. but this whole incident is fucked up. this deserves an investigation nonetheless. in all my years of watching hockey i aint ever seen something go that far south. im still having a hard time trying to convince myself that this was nothing more than just a freak accident. i just wish it never would have happened. takes the fun out of watching the game. sure i love to see some good hits and fights, but nobody needs to be killed over a sporting game.
