Australia plans to kill thousands of wild horses by shooting them from helicopters, environment official says

The Australian government plans to kill wild horses by shooting them from the air.
"There are simply too many wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park," an environment official said.
About 19,000 wild horses live in the park, according to Reuters.
Feral horses are threatening native wildlife and must be killed, an Australian environment official said this week.
"There are simply too many wild horses in Kosciuszko National Park," Penny Sharpe, environment minister for New South Wales, said this week, The Guardian reported. "Threatened native species are in danger of extinction, and the entire ecosystem is under threat. We must take action."
About 19,000 wild horses, dubbed "brumbies," are believed to live in the park, which is located in southwest Australia, AFP reported. The goal is to reduce the population to 3,000 by 2027.
"This was not an easy decision no one wants to have to kill wild horses," Sharpe said.
Across Australia, the population of wild horses is believed to be over 400,000.
Australian authorities have tried to reduce the population with aerial killings before. In 2000, more than 600 wild horses were shot in three days, according to The Independent. The public backlash led to a two-decade hiatus, the outlet reported.
The return to aerial killing comes after environmental officials tried unsuccessfully to significantly reduce the horse population via traps and rehoming of captured animals, among other less controversial tactics, per Australian broadcaster ABC.

Guess this is what is required to deal with invasive species when everything else fails in order to save native species. Sad.

It says right in the OP they tried catching and rehoming and that didn't work either.

I'm not sure there's a place on earth you could relocate 16,000 wild horses to and not have it impact the local environment.

I thought Australia already tried this? Maybe the initial plan was postponed.

America does it too. And no one talks about it.
The actual terror the place in those horses before being killed is unspeakable.

It's not to different from when people shot Buffalos from trains, for the hell of it.

Wasnt the buffalo extermination to harm the Indians and spread room for cattle?
I wasnt sure if feral horses were being managed in the USA, but the argument for lethal management is that they are an invasive species.
Horses ancestors lived in the Americas, but they went extinct long before the wild horses, the ancestors of domestic horses, evolved.

Not that it is a huge problem but the United States still has a bunch of wild horses and people don't realize it. When I was younger I visited my mom and step dad on an Indian Reservation in Nevada. My step dad took me to a place way up in the canyons/mountains where there was an isolated valley no outsiders knew about and there was large packs of wild mustangs still thundering across the plains there. It was pretty amazing.

Maybe the horses are more deserving of life than the native species? Did they ever consider that?!

We do, just no semi auto or automatic ones. And they're very strict with getting a licence to own one. You must have a very good reason for it, like living on a property or something like that.

We cull roos frequently too.

Ive heard stories of wild horses becoming overpopulated and destroying the ecosystem. Id imagine this isnt a bunch of evil scientists wringing their hands together saying they hate horses, but a tough decision to save the other things living there.

That is generally why populations are culled. Especially in a giant wasteland where humans don't live like 103% of the Australian interior.

This is such a waste, think of all that juicy horse-meat.... I'm literally salivating.
This could be turned around, if they popularized eating "wild" horse meat, their problem would disappear within 10 or 12 months.

It would be more realistic if there weren't so many of them. Once the population gets past a certain point, it isn't a viable solution. Same thing for all of Pablo Escobar's hippos (or descendants more accurately) in Colombia.

I'm just gonna say, they went to war with emus before and lost. What makes them think this will be any different?
