Netflix on the Switch barely even worked. Browser was good for specific flash games and porn, tho.

I'm honestly baffled as to why Switch doesn't have Netflix or many streaming apps. Is it the lack of 4k? I don't even pay for 4k on Netflix.

Having Netflix on the Switch would be handy when going to a hotel as it can also be plugged into the TV.

It's obviously one purpose, I just wonder what their reasoning is. Maybe they were worried that the Switch might end up like the PSP and wanted to ensure watching stuff would be a secondary function rather than a primary one.

Maybe they're still mad that somebody at Netlfix leaked that they were briefly in talks with Nintendo over some shows and rumors got out.

The Wii had Wii Sports & the novelty of motion controls. Aside from codifying the concept of handheld PCs, the Switch's biggest mainstream draw is probably pandemic Animal Crossing.

Is netflix on any console even any good? I tried the built-in netflix player of my TV and it was terrible. Even if I had Google fiber level internet speed I doubt it would help. And there's no download option for offline viewing like there is on mobile last I checked.

Bout the same across the board. Biggest problem with the Switch is you would be limited to its screen resolution which gets outdone by most modern cellphones.

The former is unlikely, since stuff like Hulu is on Switch.

Limits on the screen and storage concerns (assuming you are allowed for downloading movies)

What limits, and what concern for storage? Netflix is a streaming service.

For starters the 720p screen and the fact that it is a handheld would probably mean they would offer the download movie functionality to it since a streaming service kinda needs a connection to the internet.

Netflix on mobile can download the content on your phone.

Didn't know that about the mobile version, never used it. Don't see why the 720p would stop people from watching, or why storage would be so much of an issue. It's one of the few platforms with hot swappable memory.

That still doesn't make any sense since microSD cards work fine and I'm sure a phone with 32gb/64gb internal storage can use Netflix.

I'm in the camp that it's extremely unnecessary. I can't see any realistic scenario where I would prefer watching Netflix on an undocked Switch vs just my phone. It's also doubtful I'd bring my dock anywhere that didn't have another device that could use Netflix.

Maybe Netflix was trying to play hard ball with the contracts and Nintendo called their bluff? Maybe Hulu gave them a really good deal for some level of exclusivity. Who knows? Nintendo will get worked up and make irrational decisions all the time, but I feel like this at least was calculated.

I just feel like the first ever portable console should have leaned into not just the gameplay aspect, but the portable aspect.

especially because all the systems previously had these things, including the Wii U before the switch

Thing is, Switch in docked mode can run in 1080p

But you would think Netflix and other streaming services would love to stream at 720p because it's less strain on servers right?

No, why would it? If anything Nintendo makes money from hosting the service.

I would definitely use it, though it wouldnt affect my decision to buy. It would be better than watching Netflix on my phone, which I do now.

I get annoyed with the people who say I wouldnt use it so why would anyone else want to use it?

My family had a Wii of which its only purpose was to play Netflix set up in the front room for many years. I just think it was neat.

I like the multimedia functionalities in consoles even if I don't always use them, they're neat options. I haven't had a dedicated DVD player in years because I just play them with my PS3/4 instead.

Awful take

Huh.

- underpowered hardware relative to the rest of the market, heavily outdated at this point
- lacks features and apps compared to previous Nintendo consoles
- no web browser, unlile every other device on the market
- locks voice chat for some games behind a phone app
- sales less frequent than on other consoles
- first handheld with paid online lol
- higher than average stick drift issues

It's entirely carried by the games.

I think it's pretty unfair to mention all the switch's obvious hardware limitations while also not acknowledging those deliberate design decisions that are its strengths. We got a lightweight hybrid console that could be played handheld or hooked up to a tv. It's very easy to play with friends and the controllers are accessible, it has a very lightweight UI that I actually prefer to other consoles (because its faster to actually play a damn game).

Bluetooth would have been nice. A better battery and screen would be nice. And nintendo doing their usual asshat shit of rereleasing 20 year old games for $70 is fucking ASS,

But once you start saying stuff like "but no web browser" that's when I know you're cooking up nonsense. Who the fuck wants to browse the internet on their switch...

It seems like a pretty niche case and I'm struggling to understand what even that niche case would be. You have a $300 video game console but you don't have a budget android smartphone that can load the internet? I'd understand that argument 10 or 20 years ago. I don't get it now, when I see 10 year old kids with budget smartphones.
