Disoriented 60y/o man gets lost, opens gate to a yard. Gets mauled by five pits on sight. Police arrive, finding him unconscious and still being mauled so they shoot two pits. Victim was evacuated in critical condition.

A man is in critical condition after being attacked by five dogs in a West Philadelphia neighborhood Wednesday afternoon. Police shot at the dogs, killing one of them.

The police captain and a neighbor told NBC10 that the 60-year-old victim was likely disoriented when he walked by the "beware of dogs" signs and into a narrow alleyway before he opened the gate to a yard where the dogs were located.

He didnt know where he was at. So when the lady came out that lived there she just told him to get off the property. So when he was getting off the property instead of him coming back to the street, he went through her walkway to the alley," neighbor Kenny McGraw said.

The dogs attacked him on sight.

When officers arrived on the scene they had to pull the dogs off of the man who fell unconscious before shooting two of the five. One of those dogs died. The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he is listed in critical condition.

Police describe the dogs involved as Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Three of them were still in the yard as officers worked to clean up the scene.

There is no sign you can put on your fence that makes it okay to have a pack of dogs that will instantly maul anyone who steps foot in your yard.

Nobody should be allowed to own 5 dogs.

I saw a video of a man getting mauled by 2 pits and that was tragic. Doubt there was anything even left of him after that.

How was the weather in Philly? It's possible he had a heat stroke and was just trying to get home. Imagine having a heat stroke and then to make matters worse you get mauled by a pack of wild beasts.

1) Britain, so they'd probably be arrested for shooting a trespasser.

2) There's an ability to show judgement entirely missing with the dogs rather than a person using a gun. For example, if the trespasser is trying to leave and you shoot them in the back it's generally murder, but dogs can't make that distinction.

Dogs are roughly akin to leaving a lethal booby trap; both should be first degree murder.

Putting up a trespassers will be shot sign doesnt actually make it legal to murder somebody just for stepping on your property either.

Its the homeowners responsibility to not create a deadly response to mundane , non-threatening things. You might as well argue you should be able to line your yard with land mines. Also this was not a fucking home invader.

that's something i never understand, is 1 seriously not enough? at any rate, when something like this happens, they need to track down whoever's obviously breeding them out of their backyard and shut that shit down

Even in the US, you dont have the legal right to shoot someone for trespassing in your yard. They have to be physically in your home.

And JFC at anyone saying this is justified. Nobody deserves to die for even intentionally walking into your yard, let alone if its an elderly person with cognitive issues. Or imagine if it was a child who couldnt read warning signs.

Probably an early sign of dementia coming. Its not like all of a sudden you have dementia, it can be little forgetful incidents that happen over the years. It just gets more common at one point and your family cant ignore it anymore.

The person was unfortunately not in a state of mind to obey the warning signs. The dogs were secure in the yard. The dogs dont inherently deserve to be put down for attacking someone who entered the property unwelcome to the propertys owner. No one animal should be responsible for the actions it inflicts on a trespassing individual. Its animal, not a creature with enough sense to make judgements like a human. If the person had not been trespassing I would agree with putting the dog down. Also, if the presoasser was nonviolent and the property owner responded violently, then I was would have issues with the property owner. This situation? Its like ignoring a wet floor sign and slipping because one was acting a fool on the wet floor.

Beware of dog signs dont make it legal for your dog/s to kill somebody, though. Especially if your gate isnt locked. It can protect you from liability if somebody, say, gets bit, but its not a murder license.

What, do you think police see a dog mauling somebody to death, and go Hold on, make sure there were no beware signs first!

No. They do whatever is necessary to try to save the person.
