Back in the days when they still played music videos on MTV. Now you just look up what video you want on youtube, but there was a surprise factor back then that made it fun. You never knew what you were going to see, especially when new videos came out.

I remember. Those were the days when I'd be drawing dinosaurs, playing with toys, and watching Saturday morning cartoons. I'd be blissfully unaware of all the horrors taking place in the world. Super Nintendo was the pinnacle of home entertainment. If you wanted to look stuff up, you had no choice but to use a library. Despite technological advances, I still look back fondly on those days.

Wonky internet was fun. Hard to navigate websites with huge fonts, eBaumsworld etc had some weird charm.

I kind of miss the days before the internet but tbh back then people were just watching a lot of tv and consuming other media instead. Like I used to watch 4 hrs television in the evening and that's just been replaces with online time mostly. But not being to be reachable and have access to internet 24/7 was nice in its own way.

I am both old enough and young enough to know what life was like before the internet and cell phones, but to now also be spoiled by them and take them for granted.

I miss magazines being plentiful and not everyone being an asshole on social media, but I also now have a minor conniption if my service goes out for a while.

Before the net? Not really. Before modern net and social media? Definitely. Ringtones were everwhere, real media player lurked around every corner, recording movies from the free weekend you randomly got from HBO or Showtime. Your child was a prodigy cuz he knew how to set the clock on the VCR. People wore baggy jeans(no not that jeanco shit). Only fools paid for power windows.

not everyone being an asshole on social media

Everyone was an asshole in the media I used, but that sort of balanced out into a blanket understanding. Like, if literally everyone calls everyone else the same insult, it stops being an insult and works like a greeting instead.

Having to mind your manners too much is something you do with people that can never truly be in your default comfort zone. Work friends get manners. Couch friends call each other assholes, constantly.

Not terribly, no. Had that small window of using encyclopedias to do crappy little social studies papers, and that's about it.

But we also moved from an inner city school to a suburb right around that time, so access to resources were wildly different.

Yes.

And I remember the internet before the worldwide web existed, too. When the only way you could access something not on your computer was if you knew the telnet address of the computer that was online.

The telnet address and proper port number.

Even then, all you saw was it's folders and all the files in them - which you could then download.

Yeah, after school we played sports until sunset, I usually just stopped at home to grab my hockey sticks or whatever for what we were playing. Then we had a family dinner, did homework, watched TV for an hour or two and went to bed. Sometimes gamed on my console, more during weekends but still I felt like I was outdoors 90% of the time being active.

Oh don't get me wrong, there are and have always been assholes everywhere, but before everything and everybody was connected and overexposed by the internet, you didn't have to experience most of it. Out of sight, out of mind.

Can't go on the internet anymore these days without cringing at some asshole behavior bullshit.

I 'member. I was preteen when it was taking off and my family first got dial up, though, so I only experienced "pre internet" as a kid.

I remember a lot of time spent reading or playing with toys, but also a lot of time spent just wandering around the house/yard bored. Didn't have my own tv for the longest time, and I couldn't take over the family one to watch cartoons. Didn't live in suburb so there were no other kids around either, just one neighbor with shitty teenagers and angry rottweilers.

I don't miss it. Prefer the internet days.

Yes, but that was when I was really young. And I think technically the internet was already around, just super limited.

But then when I did know internet as a kid, for many years it was the dial up version and my older brother usually hogged it at home. To me it was more of a thing I associated with school.

Yes
We didn't get the internet until I was 19 because we couldn't afford a computer. Shit was terrible.

Beyond standard conveniences, sex related stuff was not great. Getting a dick blowjob from a girl was a gamble. She at best would get good advice from a friend. Normally, she'd either get bad advice or have learned from a 90s porn clip where there was like violent deep throating and gagging. Like, girls would run their teeth along it or give a light bite because a friend told them it was sexy and drove guys wild. It was awful.

My gift to the world was in college, I'd let friends practice on me and give them advice. You're welcome

i printed out 200 page walkthroughs for games i didnt own a console for.

I rented video games to look at the instruction booklet for a game i didnt own a console for.

Couldnt emulate playstation on pc in the 90s either so all i had was walkthroughs and instruction booklets until the late 90s when i could finally afford to buy a console. (I had some crap pcs given to me for free by my uncle but they sucked for games

Yeah, in the olden times, such services relied on the drivers to actually know how to get there with their own knowledge.

It actually worked pretty well, if you could actually get one to pick you up.
