The GOP is clearly the common denominator that is causing the damage and erosion of our democracy. Please do not shift that blame onto a vulnerable group of people. I really do not like the ageist focus on gaffes as opposed to policy.

There can be multiple causes of predictable disasters. You'll never find me minimizing the evil of the Republican Party. Democrats don't need to help them along by using paper thin arguments about ageism to cover for blatant and widely foreseen own goals.

When you hold power in a crucial defense point when you're at extremely high risk of being able to defend your post and being unable to be removed as well, you're doing Republicans a favor. They LOVE it when someone hangs on too long because it gives them a chance for fuckery like they may do now and did do with RBG. We shouldn't do what they want us to do, we should do the things that strike fear and rage into their hearts. Like having young, healthy, popular politicians for example.

What's the line to be drawn? An 80 year old can have decades left in them. There needs to be a serious focus on the policies that show this conflict of interest before we even think about forcibly removing elected officials for belonging to a vulnerable group of people.

What's the line?

Health and mental capabilities.

Looks like the flag was already there when she took office. It was replaced after it got destroyed but it's unclear who actually ordered it. Regardless it happened on her watch. After it got destroyed a second time, she stepped in to block a second replacement.

I don't think unproven is the right word for this. I know snopes has a mostly true category which sounds more appropriate.

How do you challenge this? Could you imagine an inquiry into someone's mental state being a legal option for republicans? It would be a disaster.

I'm fine with an age limit, full stop. If you're good enough to be a politician still and have your mental faculties, you are good enough to step down and have a protege ready.

But once Newsome replaces her, Dems are free to put someone on the committee?

Shouldn't take long to replace her, it's a Dem governor of a blue state replacing a Dem, and she was clearly at risk of passing away for a while now.

What's the line?

Health and mental capabilities.

First, RIP tp Senator Feinstein, who did a lot of good work for America (and some bad too, but more good than bad).

Second, this kind of sentiment can be dangerous in a democracy. Health and capability at every age vary greatly from person to person. If age is not an election issue for voters to ponder as part of their decision, who gets to decide who has adequate "health and mental capabilities" to stay in office? If it is not voters deciding an individual is not fit, then that presents some democracy problems. If we do a strict cut off age for all, then we just need to acknowledge that we will lose out on considering some good leaders that way. Because not everyone loses their ability to function on their 60th birthday.

I obviously don't think Senator Feinstein should have been there at 90, and I think an age cut off for politicians is worth discussing (as long as we acknowledge the drawbacks too). But I hate this discussion because it lets our fellow American voters off the hook for their stupid decisions. The truth is, we have a system right now where voters can take factors like age into account when deciding who will lead them-they get to decide every election. If we start talking about age cutoffs and removing people from office when someone deems they are no longer adequate to the task, then we are basically saying that the electorate is too stupid and untrustworthy to make their own decisions.

And maybe they are! People keep voting for Donald Trump in droves, and he is the least qualified, dumbest and most corrupt person to ever hold a public office. One of the great disappointments of my adult life is the realization that the electorate in my country is basically a clown car. All I am saying is that if we start deciding for voters who they can vote for and why, it seems to put this whole democracy thing in a little more peril every time. Because who knows what policy we will come up with next to decide who should be barred from holding and office?

Again, maybe we have to do something so people are not permitted to hold power into their 90s. It is a worthy discussion. Lets talk about it for federal judges while we are here. But lets not pretend there wasn't a way to take care of this before. There was. Voters need to start making some better and more informed decisions, or none of this is going to matter at all.

So, California has a top-two primary system, where there's only one primary and the top two vote getters advance to the general. In 2018, this was Feinstein and Democratic challenger Kevin De Leon, who campaigned to her left. Feinstein won the general 54-45, presumably with a good chunk of support coming from Republican voters, without a candidate on the ballot, looking to keep a progressive out office.
