I mean, I get whats going on, but they dont do enough in this show to lay the groundwork for you caring about the characters, their relationships and motivations, etc

So much of it is designed around people saying oh shit its that character I remember that guy! and not enough set up for the people who arent in it for the cameos and returning characters

i mean it is a show featuring the cast of Rebels continuing the plotline of the show Rebels. Its in this shit position where people like me dont want a bunch of exposition explaining 5 seasons of a tv show again and people like you who need that.

Although there are a few 15min YouTube videos that can give you a rundown of the plot of rebels pretty quickly.

I WANT them to have the guts to recast but I feel they're too damn far in with the deepfakes. Like they feel they can't back down now.

If they do I'll be very pleasantly surprised but I'm not holding out hope.

I mean I still stand by my opinion that if you're going into the show without having seen the other shows with these characters then you kinda did this to yourself

But I liked Cyric's idea of expanding Teva's role and using him as an audience surrogate to help bring newbies up to speed.

It's going to be so disappointing when we get the Heir to the Empire movie and it's just 2 and a half hours of deepfake Luke, Han, and cgi death mask Leia.

So you're going to bring toxic energy?

All previous info leading up to Ahsoka the series was told over the course of ten seasons of animated shows liberally spread out over the last fifteen years, most well before Disney+ existed.

As I said, we don't need to know every detail about those shows, but a fuller context would be a distinct benefit to folks who only really jumped on once Mandalorian took off.

Did Mando S2 explain who Luke was for people who didn't watch the OT? What is the acceptable amount of SW knowledge that the show writers should assume when making a show?

That was a cameo, not the motivation for most of the plot like the Sabine/Ezra relationship

look all Im saying is they could have done a better job setting things up, as contrary to claims I dont think any of the marketing made it clear this was season six of a different show

Not at all. Every movie and show is part of an overarching Star Wars universe. Your example is taking something outside of the MCU to explain something in the MCU

A better analogy would be if SW required you to read a set of books from the EU to understand the current show/movie (which is in no way happening)

Just because you are dismissive of TCW/Rebels doesn't mean they aren't part of the SW universe

Nobody's being dismissive of it in value but it is a straight fact that a ton of Star Wars fans only jumped back on the sail barge with the ST and Mando.

Tbh I do think the biggest weakness with Filoni's stuff is a reliance on established characters and past/future lore while not always managing to get the story being told right now to stand on its own with clear themes, relationships and character development for the characters in question.

These things have got to be more than set ups and payoffs. What's the story you are telling right now? What is the actual motivation of these characters in this very moment? Sometimes these things get lost in the shuffle with the focus on an overarching story.

I haven't watched all of Ahsoka yet but I could certainly see this issue already being there in the first two episodes. Why does Ahsoka want a Jedi Apprentice? Why does Sabine want to be a Jedi? What does this journey mean to Ahsoka? The show doesn't seem actually interested in answering either of those questions and wants to instead focus on chasing the macguffin that leads then to Ezra and Thrawn.

Meanwhile I think of a show like Andor and there's numerous characters with complex wants, motivations and goals that are clashing with each other. Doesn't matter if you didn't watch Rogue One.

To be clear I think Luke in Mandalorian is also an example of fan service over anything of actual substance to the story they were telling.

So yes I can see these issues amplified even moreso considering the build up is from a cartoon that not many watched.

I think its fair to suggest that this big budget film-quality miniseries is meant to appeal to a wider audience than the people who watched 5 seasons of an animated childrens show and on that front, they didnt do a great job

Eh. Id say Disney brought this upon themselves. While Ashoka is basically Rebels 2, they did introduce her in Mandalorian implying to general audiences that you could jump from that to this.

Honestly I dont see why they dont use something like the MCU Legends series for this.

I can only speak for my work friend, but he told me he was lost and it's why he started watching the animated shows in tandem.

I suppose I could ask my brother in law next time I call my sister, but I think he might have seen Reb.

Its not that its hard to follow, it just expects us to care for the motivations and relationships of characters it does no work to set up

for, I assume, the majority of the people watching this Ezra is just a macguffin and the reunion scene meant very little

We'll see. They could explain that however they want. Meditated from a temple. Saw it from that 'between Space and Time' place. Vague enough to make any story they want out of it.

Part of me does hope they can somehow change the future to erase at the very least episode 9. I know they wont especially with how hard Mandalorian seems to be building up to Episode 9 details.

But man did I hate that movie. Didnt love Last Jedi but Id at least tolerate that one existing.

What's done is done. Don't think there's much point retconning anything in the ST.

There's enough loose threads they can use to build a new Jedi Order after the events of TROS from all of the recent media.

To be honest I'd thought we'd get to it in this episode. I'm kinda concerned we're not because I don't expect Baylan to survive this season.

That said I see no reason for the Valley of the Jedi to be in a place that the Jedi themselves are very largely unaware of.
Makes sense. In the original EU the valley was a Jedi legend that only Morgan and Rahn knew existed. At the same time I hope it's not the valley. Let Kyle have something. They already took operation skyhook from him.

Yeah it was Ruusan in the Mid Rim. Later established as being a site of the final battle of the New Sith Wars.

Funny enough Ruusan exists and is a known planet in the current canon. Even showed up in TCW a couple times. No Valley there, though, but it was the location where the Sith were finally defeated.

That was back when George was still in charge and ignored EU. Especially stuff from the games. Filoni knows we want Kyle Katarn but, according to him, just can't find anywhere to put him that won't just be purely fan service. I guess he'd rather have Kyle be there for a reason, instead of just "hey older fans! Look who's here!"

At some point they've gotta make a cartoon or game about Luke's Jedi academy right?

I don't think deepfake cameos in live action is gonna cut it.

That's the kinda stuff they probably should let Filoni get into. That's the kinda place they could maybe fit Kyle into.

That would be a dark series. I reckon they are going to do the opposite. Not address it and try and make sure as many of the force sensitive characters theyve introduced arent part of the academy

As someone who has never watched TCW or Rebels, I'm really enjoying this. It feels like Star Wars.

I only have background information on everything from those but I'm still loving Ezra, and Ahsoka hugging him still gave me warm feelings. Great casting for Ezra.

The show also has some of the best lightsaber duels ever.

I hope some of these characters make it post ST. It bodes well that they made it post OT, when we were originally led to believe only Obi Wan and Yoda were left.

Also, on the topic of recasting the trio, CyricZ is right. We're too far down the path of deepfaking it. I highly doubt they will recast now.

I actually didn't say it's better than the movies. I said it's some of the best ever. The Maul fight from TPM is amazing. As is the Kenobi vs Anakin fight from RotS.

The highlight here is Ahsoka vs Baylan and Ahsoka vs Anakin. And it's more about the choreography being on point. The prequels kind of fumble the choreography at many points.
