No one talks about it anymore. Imagine building an iconic franchise's game, only to be usurped by a game 3 years in early access, Skyrim in space, and a DLC for a formerly broken mess.

Kill shitton of enemies with (sometimes) fun abilities, number go up promotes loot chase, and build variety(in other games not D4). If it wasn't for a friend that I played D3/4 with I'd only be playing Last Epoch this year though. I'm also pretty interested that Grim Dawn is getting a new expansion all of a sudden.

I wish isometric ARPGs were more popular. It's just indie stuff, Blizzard AAA crap, and whatever you wanna call Path of Exile. FWIW the fact that D4 is cross platform is pretty neat for co-op since the guy I play with doesn't have a gaming PC.

Well, the genre of action RPGs is about a feedback loop of gameplay where you start off from a point of being a basic hero without much in the way of power of special abilities or gear, then build up that hero through a lot of battles where you power up your skills with experience and gear up inventory slots with randomly generated loot you find and try and mix and match to optimize your power against ever increasingly tougher foes as you progress through a campaign.

That simply may not be for you, and that's cool - but also in the modern era these games have lost the magic of what made them great in the early days. If you aren't completely incapable of playing older games, check out something like Torchlight 2 on Switch or Sacred 2 which I believe is on Xbox storefronts now. Titan Quest is another absolute king in the genre with some fairly recent additions for a game that came out around 2006 I believe? The Switch port is buggy as hell but still decently playable. The Steam version is great, I don't know how other console ports are.

Unfortunately it's getting harder to play some of the older entries, but GoG and steam still have a bunch of them if you can get them to run reliably on modern hardware.

Oh, Grim Dawn is another fairly recent and continually updated ARPG that's pretty good. Not my personal favorite for a number of reasons, but I can totally see why some really love it.

Im still playing D1. Never did get a character up to 50 back in the day. That game is definitely from the D&D era where there is a level cap but you arent really intended to get anywhere near it.

The GoG and Steam releases often have the games optimised for modern compatibility too. Diablo 1 had issues on modern Windows for years, and the workaround (changing colour depth and running in compatibility mode) was unreliable. But the version I got through GoG in 2018ish works fine.

Especially when the devs wait a month before nerfing all the fun stuff because they're trying to force people into their treadmill to keep those monthly active user numbers up.

grim Dawn does start off pretty basic but once you get to 50+ some really cool items start dropping that can change or make whole builds

i have a DW pistol character that basically fills the screen with fire and lightning every time I shoot.

TQ feels kinda dated but its fun to play through once at least. Making the right build can be hard though

I strongly disagree.

Both of them are the literal opposite of rigid and uninspired. It's an open system where you can mix and match any two classes in a number of different ways (or stick with one). Your build can be great or totally suck depending on how you pick and choose your ability scores, classes, and skills.

You might just prefer a more straightforward single class/tree system.

it's because blizzard has failed to understand what made D2 fun

it wasn't just grinding and killing monsters nonstop. It was about experimenting and theorycrafting with the intent to see how you would perform in PvP. Trying out different builds, breaking different frame caps, and searching/trading for that coveted gear that will bring your FHR just beyond a certain frame cap to give you that edge

That's where the magic was. Blizzard took all of that away in D3 and in D4. There is no tradeoff when it comes to gear. Better gear is strictly better. There is no point in comparing and contrasting. Experimenting with different builds isn't fun because it doesn't feel like I'm pushing to the game to its limit, instead I'm playing within the confines that blizzard expects me to play the game

It's because Activision/Blizzard doesn't care what made D2 fun. D4's sole purpose is to sell microtransactions. Every decision - from it being open world to the pace of leveling and everything between - is made towards that end.

Well it was also trying to railroad players into the seasons by dramatically reducing player power and experience gain and putting all of what they took away into a special seasonal system that doesn't actually work in the regular overworld. So they basically told everybody just playing the game and having fun that if they're not engaging with the seasonal system they were just going to have less fun from here on out.

Seven of the top 10 games on steam charts have been out for years. I didn't count Cyberpunk because it just got an expansion so it's not "old" but even that came out in 2020.
