Threads has more users and has a lot more established accounts belonging to celebrities, news outlets and brands, but ends up being too similar to Instagram where there are obnoxious ads and influencers all over the place. You also need an Instagram account, and by extension a Meta/FB account.

Bluesky is basically a 1:1 clone of 2008-2012 Twitter, easily the least toxic platform, generally more fun to browse, much more private, and has a significant art/journalism presence, but finding content can be difficult and has less multimedia features. All you need to sign up is an invite code and as of recent, possibly an email.

You mean the real news that they posted on Twitter? Twitter has been a super convenient and effective way to get breaking news on pretty much anything. A lot of stories broke on Twitter.

And Musk has fucked it and everyone goes "Yay" because they still pretend the site was nothing but randos sharing unsolicited opinions

First it'll be Twitter. And then Meta and other sites will see what Elon is doing and since they have no limits on what they want, Facebook will be subscription based. And the. You'll need a subscription to even Google stuff or watch Youtube. And maybe even Fandom will follow the leader and wikia and Gamefaqs will be subscription based once TikTok and Wikipedia fall.

This is the beginning of the end for free websites.

The fact that he pushes it as a means to "eliminate the problem of bots" is particularly laughable, given that Muskrat himself is the single biggest user of bots. A majority of his followers are bots.

The claim of "550 million monthly active users" is also a joke. That's where Twitter was before Musk torched the site.

LMAO, you seriously think all the other sites are going to follow Musk off the cliff, when it's demonstrated that less than 1% of users would be willing to pay even a nominal fee?

If he actually forces it through, I think that'd be the nail in the coffin. People would lose at least 90% of their Twitter exposure, if not more. By the time the first month ends, I'd bet 90% of the people who paid for the first month would cancel after it becomes a wasteland. I see no world where a significant portion of people would even contemplate paying for it. The only way he makes it work is if he somehow kills all competing apps through legal bullshit, but I doubt there'd be anything he could do.
