Before it was yoga and everybody was raving about it. Now it feels like the focus has shifted into crossfitting. Crossfit this, crossfit that; it sounds like a catchphrase. I hear it at least once a month from a health conscious person that they crossfit, whatever that means. I've tried looking at videos on youtube and all I see are people doing circuit training with bodyweight exercises. Is that pretty much it? I don't see how it's any different from lifting weights for muscular endurance or warm up exercises for athletes that train for high contact sports like wrestling or boxing.

the main issue with crossfit is that you have to actually be pretty decently fit to do it effectively in the first place. its not something a beginner can really do immediately. like you can build up to it, but if anybody tries to sell you "yo tubby pay me for crossfit training immediately" theyre probably trying to scam you

As someone that wrestled in high school, I find the circuit training in cross fitting to be on par with the pre warm up exercises that we did in wrestling. I remember doing 5 sets of 100 push ups, sit ups, frog jumps, and sprawl up downs. Then right after we would proceed to run 2 miles and do 3 rounds of 2 minute wrestling spars. It was intense. Cross fitting just undermines the efforts of wrestlers.

Pretty sure the various crossfit gyms are connected through the crossfit organization. The all follow the same workout schedule and members are encouraged to submit the times or weight that they use to complete their workouts. Plus there's an annual crossfit games where competitors all get together to compete in a yearly competition.

yes like one of them was a worthwhile cause, but typically you get like weirdly obsessed with things you shouldnt get obsessed with and try to play this know it all attack angle which frankly seems so weird and misplaced. like what are you even trying to prove in this topic? i normally agree with you on pretty much everything, but crossfit is a legitimate exercise, not a scam, and yet youre doubling down on attacking it in this topic when its pretty clear that its something youre not very well versed in.

im not trying to troll you. i am legitimately trying to give friendly advice. a topic like this is not the place to go all out on.

this is a weird direction to attack it from. its not a "lifestyle" or a "craze" its just a legitimate form of exercise and competition that you can choose to either partake in or not. thats all there is to it.

You don't need to join a crossfit gym to do crossfit workouts. It's just circuit training, which isn't a fad or a scam. You're not being tricked into workout by joining a crossfit gym. All you're doing is signing up for a fitness class that helps you stay consistent and focused.

Right, its just a way to market circuit training to consumers. Thats what I mean by a scam. It isnt anything special, despite how its marketed.

we dont actually have an issue then. i thought you were calling it an actual scam. its mainly marketed that way because there is an actual crossfit organization where you can compare times and even compete, but its all entirely optional. i thought you were calling it a scam by suggesting they were trying to trick people or something

the difference is mainly that p90x made claims they couldnt back up, such as insisting you could lose x amount of weight by doing it. crossfit doesnt do that. crossfit is basically just an organized high intensity circuit training. they dont claim you have to do it or anything. all crossfit really does is provide a platform for you to connect to other people that do it and you can compare times and compete if you want to. thats pretty much all it is. its just circuit training but organized. there is no "buy in" cost or anything

Its not a scam in the sense that its fake or dont work, its a scam in the sense that you pay extra for a brand. Years ago when I was shopping around for a gym membership, the CrossFit gym was like triple the price. But yes, it is still effective for getting and starting in shape, Im sure.

i get that, yeah. crossfit gyms do typically cost more because they mainly help you prepare for the actual competition point, instead of just regular getting fit. thats a fair critique.

my main argument was that crossfit in general isnt a scam because you can do it without joining a crossfit gym at all

You're also paying for the coaching. It's not like a globogym or even a members only 24/7 access gym, every class there's a coach there working with you.

As far as programming goes, you can boil it down to high intensity circuit training (see also orange theory and F45).

Regarding what you see on TV with the CrossFit games, that's -not- what your average member is doing in the gym, any more than your average gym bro is pulling a 900# deadlift like a professional strongman. CF is infinitely scalable to accommodate skill and injury or other limitations.

Personally, while the constant variability of the workouts will make you very well rounded, I found it hard to get good at any one specific movement and really didn't care for the Olympic lifts. I'm much happier doing powerlifting now and focusing on squat, bench, and deadlift
