I think Im going to drop it and move on to BN5. I dont remember how good the end game is for BN4. That is why I wanted to play it. But man I got to Aquaman in the first run of the story and l want to immediately quit. The game tells me to look for Aquaman on the net. No hints. Just search the net and hope you find him. Takes too long. To top it off, while you are searching, there is a drowning mechanic for reasons.

Once you find Aquaman, he swims away to another part of the net with no hint. Once you find him again, you have to go find his operator to get a key to get into the area he is in. No hints on that either unless you talk to the person who gave you the mission to begin with. Then you have to jack back into the net, go back to that door and talk to Aquaman to end it. Also, you cant run away from ANY FIGHT while the water is up making it even more of a slog.

That is so fucking stupid. Its a massive time sink with zero payoff. Its just a way to extend the game. That scenario is pretty much BN4s campaign in a nutshell and you have to do it 3 times to get to end game? I think? Actually worse than BN1. What a terrible game in the series.

I agree. The main story shouldnt be a mega unfun grind. If that is your story, then that is pretty much your game. The game is unfun. Its boring as fuck

I beat mega Man battle network 1 and 2, then took a break.

Three should be fun but dreading four a bit.

Sure but why? Also, helping cuts down on some time but that doesnt change the fact that it takes to long and is boring. Plus, that is one example of many for the game. It happens the entire game and you need to beat it 3 times. Even with a guide its awful

I always liked playing Megaman games, and I remember checking out some of the Battle Network games on GBA emulator or something many years ago... and being all "WTF is this shit?"

You play a kid that goes around playing some grid based game, it's got a pokemon feel for sure with it's sort of mildly futuristic contempo town setting ... but I couldn't help thinking at least in Pokemon the kids collect actual physical living creatures they can interact with!

Yeah 4 had issues. Forced replay, good luck lucking into the "5 chips of darkness" needed to reach the endgame without just getting library completion, generally very strange plot pacing and direction.

BN4 is a complete trainwreck. The fact that you have to play said trainwreck 3 damn times to complete it is just the cherry on the shit sundae.

The entire Battle Network series is a great example of a cool idea with terrible execution. It is also the best example of padding and useless filler content I can think of. Just went through BN2 again in the collection, and did the Shadowman Yumland arc where you have to find a bunch of items for Chng.bat and then look for a bunch of other random things, going back and forth for no reason other than padding.

I honestly think the only reasons these games got popular is because of nostalgia. MM fans who were teens and grew up on classic were not keen on the series and usually made fun of it online. However, the current generation grew up on it and care about it. I want to know what they think of all the time wasting in the series.

Anyway, BN6 is the best one because it seems the most focused and has a lot less dumb padding. The mechanics are also very refined.

Yeah, 4's story wasn't that fun to go through. Battling is a blast especially if you can find people to battle against, but 4 is definitely one of the worst titles in the series overall.

I was a high schooler when 4 came out, so nobody was playing this. Was it more of an elementary school thing? I never knew anybody that was actively playing this 20 years ago. And the online in the collection seems dead.

Yeah, my friends and I were either in elementary school or middle school then.

BN4 was complete dogshit. Terrible design, poor translation, generally an unfun experience and a bad narrative based about netbattle tournaments. The internet maps were not fun either. Only cool thing about it is its the only game that has it where you battle normal navis and dark navis

I got the collection bc nostalgia for 2 and 3 and I'm in the middle of 4 now and can't really bring myself to keep going. I hear 5 and 6 are better tho? My biggest gripe is ugly Internet where it's unclear how to traverse from one area to the next other than memorizing the map. This was an issue in 1 that was rectified in 2 and 3 so idk why they went backwards in terms of world design.

5 and 6 are way better. 5 Im biased towards because that was my first BN game and I know a lot of people dont like the liberation missions but idk, I think it was a good game. 6 has improvements on everything in the series.

Yeah, you can probably skip 4 since 5 is better. Probably without missing story beats.

I actually played the DS version of 5, which is kind of a mashup of both games, with some bells and whistles. But if it is similar at all, yeah.

5 and 6 are huge improvements, 6 being the best in the whole series imo.

Speaking of 5, did they add the Bass Soul into the BN5 games from the DS or did they just port the GBA games without making any changes? That would be really cool if they did but I have a feeling they didnt. I got BN5 on DS later on and Bass Soul was awesome. Bass was my favorite character in the series

Some of the BN4 scenarios are really stupid large for no good reason. Ice Ball M sticks out for BN3 and Press but 4 was particularly bad.

The collection was the first time I played 4 and it was so awful. I loved the first three games as a kid and I basically 100% them again in the collection and had a great time doing it. Then I played 4 and I had to force myself to finish it.

Everything about it was inferior to the first three except the streamlined travel system (no repeatedly running through the subway or, worse, 3's airport). It just wasn't fun at all. And when I found out the post game required just playing through the story 2 more times, I quit there and moved on to 5.

So far I'd say 5 is definitely worse than 2 and 3 as well.

Skip 4, 5 is better but skip it too if you want 6 which might be the best in the series.

Compared to BN1, I can tolerate BN4. If anything. PvP is fantastic on that game.
