He was born rich, daddy funded his first companies, and then he lied and conned his way to more wealth. Hes remarkably stupid and is a pathological liar; he lies non-stop about literally everything. One of the worst humans and one of the dumbest. His success through fraud and fraud alone is a reflection of how messed up our society is. See also: Donald Trump.

Looking at the way he's run Twitter, it seems like his success came mostly from a combination of being born rich, luck, self promotion, and being able to dazzle people with big promises that he doesn't make good on.

A long time ago he merged his failing business with PayPal, something he immediately wanted to rename to "X." They subsequently kicked him from the board.

He is still that same moron in every way, he just no longer has anyone above him to stop him from doing his bad decisions. And his "big success" was buying a car company that he immediately got the cars to write "sex."

Dumb guy, obnoxious, right place right time right strategy to soak up elite talent for his companies.

These days controlled mostly by spite for the woke mob that started to dunk on him as he got wealthier/more visible.

Now hes invincible from any sort of consequences because its impossible to lose any meaningful amount of his wealth.

That is arguably his dumbest thing he has ever done. It is, quite literally, the start up of his own apocalypse. The only question is if the radiation or exponential "close call" computation bloat is going to cause the entire thing to come crashing down at this stage, because if there is anything that Musk excels at it's being the absolute worst to a completely unparalleled level.

That Wil Wheaton post on Facebook

I can not fathom the emptiness, the insecurity, the insatiable need for attention and validation, the staggering arrogance, the malevolence and total void of human experience that is Elon Musk.
He's the richest man on the planet. You can't go anywhere or do anything without interacting with something he's part of in some way. There are literal millions of people who uncritically worship him, in spite of overwhelming evidence that he's a douchebag. Some number of them will come after me, as they come after anyone who points at their naked emperor. They'll spend entire days going after me and people like me, slavishly serving a man who does not even know they exist. They are his army of fools, uncritically serving his every whim. And it still isn't enough.
He can have any material thing he wants, and he will *never* be happy or satisfied. He has no real friends. Every single person around him is either a viper, a parasite, or both.
So what does he do? He bullies and threatens and harasses and trolls and behaves like the weak, scared, insecure child he has always been. That's a tragedy for him, but it's dangerous for us. He doesn't care what he destroys or who he hurts as he chases this existential thing he can not ever have.
You know the saying "hurt people hurt people"? He's a hurt person who is hurting our society, making people I care about less safe. The consequences of this one man's midlife crisis are global, and that terrifies me.

He's a mediocre guy that got super lucky initially. And again picking the right industry's to compete in at the best possible time.

Even Twitter wouldn't have been a catastrophe if the tech bubble didn't burst. But overall I appreciate his hand in creating things like tesla and spaceX. So he was a net gain to humanity overall as far as most other billionaires go in my book.

That's fair.

And the bigger one of the two I mentioned right now is the exponential computation issue ( https://www.space.com/starlink-satellite-conjunction-increase-threatens-space-sustainabilit ). Because he is doing his best to blot out the sun the total number of satellites have increased dramatically. In a generic sense this is a bit of a problem but because he does so so *extremely* haphazardly it becomes a big problem as now each of the software suites that have to factor in the bloat. Now satellites are set up to automatically dodge one another somewhat so nothing problematic has happened so far, but all of these near misses requires that the satellites move out of their original paths. Prior to Musk this wasn't really something that happened at all, but with him the number became an actual figure. And because of these changes happening it is having an exponential domino effect in that every month is a new record for near misses. While it is still at the "near miss" stage this sort of exponential growth of an issue is apparent in how it's going to be a problem: eventually it won't be a near miss, and then it's going to go from big problem to "Welp, we just lost space."

ok, i am somewhat familiar with all that, i just didn't realize how big an effect starlink itself was causing.

i will also mention, because i forgot to earlier, that my opinion of starlink dropped when it was apparently dropped for Ukraine near the beginning of the invasion. that should never have been allowed to be a possibility.
