My partner and I were dating then and she really wanted to vacation somewhere with winter weather so we said fuck it and booked a trip to Detroit. It was such a cheap trip that it was hard to turn down. All in all it was a pretty great trip. We stayed in a loft Airbnb on the river, saw the Motown museum, couple art museums and the main library, some actual Detroit-style pizza (with salad that was more ham than lettuce), drank a bunch of beer, etc. We walked around a bunch and had no issues, the only sketchy parts were actually on Uber/Lyft rides. On one of those our driver pulled up to a stoplight that had a panhandler on the corner and I guess he thought that was suspicious enough in December that he preemptively drew his pistol before he stopped. Another time our driver told us about the New Year's Eve tradition of people busting their guns in the air at midnight.
