What's the better way to score media: Like/dislike or X out of X

When aggregated, which method gives a more accurate score?

They aren't everything, but they can be useful. Reading the reviews is much better, of course.

Numbered scores are absolutely useless. What does it even mean when something gets a 6/10 vs a 6.5 or 7? What's the difference between a 3/10 thing and a 4/10 thing?

It's more precise than just upvoting/down voting for starters.

Good or bad is generally more useful than the guessing game is discerning the exact meaning of a score.

Unless you have a clear and concise methodology for scoring, a 6 to a 7 can be seen as something done on a whim or arbitrary.

That's the problem.

Not knowing what the score means from a specific person.

If you know the person, and know they rate stuff, you know if an 8 is strong score, or a weak one.

If you have one person raiting many things, the score is much better, because it gives you some kind of consistent ranking.

If you have many people raiting a single thing, I would say that the score is supposed to be better too. But you need many people for it, and have to check for the 1/10 haters and free 10/10 shills.

Ratings are arbitrary anyway. you get the same effect from a 4 & 5 star review as you do with a thumbs up and vice versa. Either you know it's in your wheelhouse or not.

People actually scoring out of ten is better, but far too many people just give 10s to stuff they like and 1s to stuff they dont.

It's either good, bad, or okay.

Scores are kind of arbitrary, and mostly just open the possibility of readers thinking a grade is too low or not good enough.

It should be about the review itself, not the score.

Video games: x/x

Movies/tv: like or dislike

Games are way more costly and time consuming, you want to make surr you have the best one

Movies and tv much less so, a simple thumbs up plus description is enough

If it's a ton of random people scoring something, I prefer like/dislike due to a combination of troll ratings and numbers having different meanings for each person.

If it's a single person doing the scoring, I prefer a numerical score. More precise, and you can typically compare it with scores they have given to other media.

That being said, I find the reviews themselves to be far more important than the scores given.

What is bad, are review aggregate sites being used as a lazy end-all to replace any need for critical analysis.

Critics and reviewers use different scales and ways to measure or give their final analysis, and metacritc tries to fit all those systems into it's one-size-fits-all approach. IGN will rarely give a AAA game less than a 70... a 60 if the thing is literally unplayable or completely misrepresented and glaringly fraudulent while many outlets will give utterly broken games a 10 or 0... This doesn't even take into account which reviewers are paid shills or saboteurs, it has no mechanism to determine that.

Except everybody's tastes are different and no game in existence can unanimously be agreed upon to be a 10/10 experience. It's much more useful seeing something like a game on Steam getting 100,000 likes vs 500 dislikes because that still tells you the overwhelming majority of people who tried it enjoyed it to some positive degree.

10 point scales suck. You just need a 4 star system
1 star: no one should watch
2 star: only fans should watch
3 star: most people should watch
4 star: everyone should watch

Everything else is unnecessary fluff

Grading system only works well if people uses the full range instead of 7-9.

Which they don't.

No way people are legitimately saying that like/dislike is a better system. What if something is exactly 5/10 for you, what exactly do you choose? Like or dislike???
