That's the problem. Not knowing what the score means from a specific person. If you know the person, and know they rate stuff, you know if an 8 is strong score, or a weak one. If you have one person raiting many things, the score is much better, because it gives you some kind of consistent ranking. If you have many people raiting a single thing, I would say that the score is supposed to be better too. If it's a single person doing the scoring, I prefer a numerical score. More precise, and you can typically compare it with scores they have given to other media. Critics and reviewers use different scales and ways to measure or give their final analysis, and metacritc tries to fit all those systems into it's one-size-fits-all approach. IGN will rarely give a AAA game less than a 70... a 60 if the thing is literally unplayable or completely misrepresented and glaringly fraudulent while many outlets will give utterly broken games a 10 or 0...
