I'm inclined to not believe in the possibility of an afterlife just because of the implied logistics, but the concept of dying and then ceasing to have any consciousness is really unsettling to me.

I just think about the times when you're really, really tired and you finally fall asleep, it's like that.

It's unsettling to me as well, but I honestly don't think too much about it.

I only briefly think about it from time to time when I think of my grandparents. Grandfather passed away last year, my grandmother being in the hospital last week for pneumonia (was released yesterday), my other grandfather being like 94, and so far so good on my other grandmother in her mid 80s.

If you have no consciousness after death you won't be there to experience eternal nothingness.

I think that's a comforting thought.

Only at the most inopportune times.

Unless you died terribly, such as being horribly murdered and / or by someone who hates you and derives some sort of sadistic pleasure from your death, death is a mercy of sorts. No more worldly problems and our times come eventually so everyone who you hate who has wronged you will eventually die and all of the egotistical fucks who think they are better than others for worldly possessions, achievements, etc. will get their reckoning as well. While it's sad that most of our struggles will amount to nothing in the end, death being the great equalizer is amazing in design.

Something after life scares me more honestly merely because it will be so completely different then it is now and change can be hard for me.

But

If what people say is true which is that you experience full ego death (like a strong DMT trip) followed by true freedom from the tethers of your body, well, that sounds pretty sweet so I don't really fear death. Both outcomes seem fine.

The older I get the more I come to accept the idea of oblivion after death and I'm okay with it. Sure I might like to live longer and experience more life... but the thought of immortality and never reaching true oblivion has started to become just as scary a thought.

Imagine a hundred extra years of life... a thousand... now imagine living with yourself after a hundred thousand or a million years... no thanks!

All that happens is the chemical reactions in your brain stop happening and you cease to exist. It will be exactly the same as how it was before you were born

although that is quite horrifying

One of my irrational fears is that you somehow retain some degree of limited awareness/consciousness after you die, and you're "stuck" in your former self for as long as it takes for your brain to fully stop functioning.

But on the opposite end of things, the afterlives as we speculate are terrible, too. If you're a good person you spend forever and ever being surrounded by loved ones praising deities, and if you're a bad person you spend forever and ever being tortured.
