People will look at the original flop, but guess what, Mario has only gotten bigger since then, and this time, he's done by Illumination. Illumination, even if you hate the movies, knows how to market them and get people to go to the theaters. Minions 2 soundly disproved the claim that Disney fans were thinking that people just didn't want to see animated films in the theaters because of Covid. Now, I want to think this will do big in Japan considering its Mario, but Japan might not go all-in since it is a western adaptation of their media, and not actually their adaptation. I can't imagine if this movie went to a more competent studio like Dreamworks or Pixar that it would perform even as well as it's doing now.
